Match Report
Rovers increased their lead to seven points atop the Premier Division this evening as Rory Gaffney’s silkily taken strike was enough to defeat Derry City at Tallaght. Prior to kick off, Rovers’ gap at the top was four points with Derry in second and surprise package, St Pats’ only a point further off in third. Knowing the impetus was on them to deliver fresh life into the title race, Derry were on it from minute one, their pacy front three alarming Rovers’ back central defenders. Yet their first opportunity was originated from goalkeeper Brian Maher, brilliantly freeing Ryan Graydon whose cutback was cut out by a danger-sensing Roberto Lopes. Starting with intent, Brandon Kavanagh went close next after dispossessing a Rovers’ man and striding forward, the winger unleashed a glorious rasper of an effort that flashed just too high of Leon Pohls’ goal. Tallaght had something to get behind in the fourteenth minute when a quick throw freed a rampaging Johnny Kenny who beat Maher to the ball but not Derry captain, Cameron Dummigan, back from injury and crucially so based on that excellent defensive intervention. Jack Byrne ignited the contest with a swivel and spin which freed Richie Towell scampering into the box on the right and although he shot strongly on target, Maher stood firm to save well. Rovers were finding their mojo after a ropey start, and they punished Derry profligacy by taking the lead twenty-seven minutes in. It stemmed from Dummigan being caught on the ball and with Kenny occupying Shane McEleney, Rory Gaffney gathered possession, daintily shuffled around some weak defending, and rolled a perfectly placed, deadly accurate shot into Maher’s bottom right hand corner! Gaffney the scourge of derry again after being the matchwinner in this, title-sealing fixture, last October. Now firmly in their groove, Gaffney went close again, a fired snapshot whistling wide before Towell’s doggedness created a chance which he put into the side-netting. Graydon and Neil Farrugia both had to depart towards the end of the first half due to injury, not ideal for Stephen Bradley or Ruaidhri Higgins as European actions looms large. After a bitty start to the second half, Gaffney, again, lit up the contest when he received the ball wide right, and one shimmy later had sent McEleney sprawling before seeing his shot in an almost-replica of his goal. Illustrating the squad depths of both, Rovers replenished their attack with the arrivals of Graham Burke and Liam Burt whilst Derry introduced Mark Connolly with Dummigan flagging. Burke made his presence known with twenty minutes left, evading tackles, and fizzing a dangerous shot narrowly off target as Derry’s possession failed to yield scoring opportunities. As the half became ever more niggly, punctuated by bookings, Derry’s attacking threat from the first half hour evaporated despite Cian Kavanagh’s introduction up front. He had an impact, smacking a header wide from a corner before reducing Daniel Cleary to cynically fouling him as Kavanagh threatened to escape in behind. Despite a late throw barrage, Rovers came closer to scoring on the counterattack in injury time but they saw it out, with ultimate ease, at 1-0. So, seven points clear go Rovers entering the European and Cup congestion of the summer, they go to Oriel Park next to play an up-and-down Dundalk. For Derry, this result is a momentum staller, and they will hope for a better attacking return when they travel to Shelbourne on Friday night, title hopes’ severely stuttering.Rovers build comfort on top with win over Derry
