Match Report
Derry Edge Shamrock Rovers In Presidents Cup Masterclass
Derry City start the season in winning style as strikes from Will Patching and Michael Duffy saw them defeat Shamrock Rovers to lift the President’s Cup.
In the season’s curtain-raiser to the LOI season, it was FAI Cup winners Derry City who put out the stronger team with Rovers’ resting players and giving four debuts from the start to new signings.
A familiar face, visiting defender Daniel Cleary looked rusty early on as Derry new boy Ben Doherty raced past him and Cleary clobbered him, to prevent an early one-on-one opportunity.
The Candystripes were getting into a rhythm and striker Cian Kavanagh should have put them ahead ij the fifteenth minute. Duffy robbed a dawdling defence but his pinpoint cross was met by a poor first touch from Kavanagh and his shot trickled harmlessly wide.
Rovers’ reprieve didn’t last long though. In the twenty-third minute, it was again Duffy who did the damage, proving unstoppable on the left flank. His fantastic cross was matched by a deft touch from midfielder, Will Patching, picking up his goalscoring form from last season.
Derry kept their foot on the accelerator, dictating all the tempo ad Rovers looked sluggish. The second goal summed this lackadaisical approach up.
No one closed Duffy down and just outside the box, his snaking shot was straight at away goalkeeper Leon Pohls who inexplicably let it slip through his hands.
That was a costly fumble and Stephen Bradley was thankful to still have eleven players on the pitch as Cleary avoided a second yellow for a cynical foul on Patching.
Despite a quadruple substitution, Brian Maher remained a virtual spectator throughout the second half. Derry managed the game calmly with Patching and Jamie McGonigle close to adding a third.
But the hosts were always comfortable and as full time went, Rovers need to improve vastly. Derry will hope that this kick-starts another season of silverware.

FULL TIME: Derry City win the President's Cup!
Into four minutes of injury time we go
Duffy departs as youngster Matthew Ward gets a late runout. Patching fired a shot high from the free kick
Kieran Cruise barges into new striker Jamie McGonigle to give Derry a free kick in an attacking position
Sluggish now from Rovers' who are really struggling to get anywhere near Brian Maher's goal and letting their touches get away from them. Derry content with their two goal cushion and controlling the game as we enter the final ten minutes
Trevor Clarke, only on as a half time substitute, gets booked. Derry looking comfortable and pushing for a third as Rovers' try to settle their subs into the game
Sadou Diallo the first home player in the book
CROSSBAR- Nearly 3-0 and Ryan Graydon thumps the crossbar after robbing Trevor Clarke!!
SECOND HALF START: Quadruple substitutions for Rovers- Clarke for Cleary, Byrne for Towell, Burke for Burt, Farrugia for Nugent
HALF TIME- Cleary wipes out Duffy and is lucky to stay on as we reach half time with Derry City 2-0 up and in control of this year's President's Cup
GOAL- Duffy doubles the lead and it is a howler from keeper, Leon Pohls! Duffy's swerving shot from range is decent but helped into the net significantly by Pohl's inexplicably letting it slip through his hands! 2-0!
CHANCE: Patching wastes a free kick from range, shooting hard but straight at Leon Pohls. Richie Towell does better seconds later, volleying just wide from inside the box!
CHANCE- Another debutant, Rovers' Markus Poom now slices wildly over from the edge of the box
CHANCE- Ben Doherty, on Derry debut, gets lucky as his errant backpass is seized upon by Liam Burt but no Rovers attacker can get on the end of his cross
GOAL- Derry lead and it's been coming! Again, Duffy instigates the move whipping in a dangerous cross and it is thumped in by Will Patching
CHANCE: Cian Kavamgh pokes wide after a poor first touch following Michael Duffy robbing a dawdling Rovers defender and squaring it only for Kavanagh to miscue
Scrappy start but visiting defender Daniel Cleary will be walking a tightrope after he is booked early for hauling down the speedy Ben Doherty
