Match Report

Clarke Claims Bragging Rights For Hoops

A high-octane Dublin Derby saw Shamrock Rovers maintain their Dublin Derby bragging rights with a 2-0 win in Tallaght, Trevor Clarke’s rebound and Rory Gaffney’s late strike proving to be the decisive factor.

It proved to be a blockbuster match from the get-go, Johnny Kenny’s tenacity proving a handful for Bohs’ backline. In just the second minute, Kenny stole the ball off Patrick Kirk in the corner and broke through on goal, the Celtic loanee producing a side footed-effort that forced James Talbot to get down low and paw the ball out of danger.

A near identical scenario repeated minutes later, this time Kenny opting to shoot across goal, the trajectory never quiet tight enough to reach on target.

The hosts continued to pile the pressure on in the opening half, Jack Byrne finding Richie Towell with a superbly weighted through ball that left the Bohs defence dumbfounded. Towell rounded Talbot and quickly went to ground, referee Rob Hennessy waving away meek protests from the Rovers players.

Despite the positive signs the first half may have proved to be eerily similar to April’s reverse fixture for Stephen Bradley-where the home side dominated the opening 20 but failed to shut the game down, eventually punished for their lack of killer instinct.

As the second half got under-way there were few chances of quality, Bohs looking more than content to soak up the pressure and maintain their four point advantage at the top of the table.

Those hopes were quickly dashed away when in the 57th minute Neil Farrugia lifted a dangerous cross in from the right flank. Kenny powered up into the air to draw a superb save from Talbot, the ball then finding itself at Trevor Clarke’s feet who rifled the ball home to ecstatic celebrations in front of the South stand.

That goal from Clarke proved to transform the game into an end-to-end display, Johnathan Afolabi breaking through on goal five minutes later, opting for a side-footed finish that saw Leon Pohls deflect with his outstretched leg.

Bohs continued to fight back with venom, major penalty shouts were had when Afolabi was brought to ground inside the box. Rovers killed the game off in the 82nd minute, Rory Gaffney thriving in chaos of a goal-line scramble, firing home a deflected ball from point blank range to seal the deal for The Hoops.

The win sees Bohs’ lead league cut to a singular point, the next few weeks proving decisive if The Gypsies are to truly challenge for the title.

Rovers will fancy their chances of continuing their winning form next week, making the short trip to Stillorgan to face a UCD side that has struggled for form this season and currently looked condemned for relegation.

Bohs are presented with another opportunity to bolster their bid for the league title, making the trip up North to face third place Derry City at the Brandywell.

  • 34'

Bohs have begun to gradually grow into the game and it may turn out to be eerily similar to April's reverse fixture-where the home side produced plenty of chances in the opening 20 but never shut down the game, and were eventually punished.

  • 12'

Grant Horton booked after bringing down Trevor Clarke on the edge of the Bohs\' box.

  • 10'

The hosts are piling on the pressure! Jack Byrne threads a superb through ball into the Bohs box that Towell connects to, rounding Talbot and going to ground in the process. No penalty is given.

  • 7'

Kenny again causing problems-the Celtic loanee latches on to a ball over to the top and outmuscles Kirk. He attempts to shoot across Talbot's goal, the trajectory never sharp enough as it rills out for a goal kick.

  • 4'

Already a great chance for Rovers. Johhny Kenny nips the ball off Patrick Kirk at the corner flag and feeds Richie Towell into the box. Towell hits a side-footed effort that forces James Talbot to get down low and save.

  • 1'

And the visitors get the derby underway in Tallaght!

  • Bohs' starting XI is strengthened by the return of Ali Coote and Jordan Flores, who will undoubtedly add more attacking fire-power to Devine's side.

  • Liam Burt was thought to be deemed fit enough to potentially make an acrimonious appearance against his former club but Bradley has opted to leave him out of the match-day squad entirely.

  • Leon Pohls replaces Alan Mannus in net after the Rovers no.1 broke and dislocated his fingers against Derry. Sean Kavanagh, Sean Gannon and Dylan Watts all remained sidelined. James Akintunde remains Bohs' sole ommission as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

  • “This is another difficult venue, and we go into this game with our eyes wide open. “We want to play to the highest level we can. We certainly won’t be going there to sit back. We have got to go there and try to attack, and be better defensively than what we were when we played them at home.”

  • Bohs manager Declan Devine is confident Bradley won't find those same chinks in his squad's armour, and insists they've taken lessons from the defeat. "To give away a goal in the 46th minute of the first half was a big blow for us having dealt with the opening 25/30 minutes being on top, creating chances, and being positive in our approach,” the former Derry manager said. “As a new group we have to accept and realise that we are going to have setbacks. But this is another game where we really want to go and perform to our highest levels. We want to win. We have played positively away in other games in difficult venues."

  • Bradey aims to replicate the same tactical execution from the reverse fixture that saw Rovers weather an early Bohemians storm and hit back emphatically with goals from Neil Farrugia and Rory Gaffney. "You always want to start the game well but the game is 90+ minutes so it’s about focusing for that 90+," Bradley said. “And when we get our period of controlling the game whether that’s the first minute or the 70th minute, whatever it is we’ve got to make it count. We did that in Dalymount and that’ll be the aim again on Friday.”

  • Rovers come off a statement 2-0 win against Derry City on Monday, exacting vengeance on the only team they've suffered defeat to this season. Manager Stephen Bradley said he was impressed with his side's victory in The Brandywell: “We dominated the first half, and the second half was just about managing the game and containing them, and we did that really well...On a difficult pitch as well, so I thought the players were excellent."

  • Evening folks and welcome along to tonight's match coverage of the Dublin Derby. It's a top-of-the-table clash, Bohemians leading second-placed Shamrock Rovers by four points. Rovers beat out Bohs 2-0 at Dalymount last month in a firey clash, and hopefully we'll see a similar match of quality tonight.
