Match Report

Burt brings derby bragging rights for Bohs

Liam Burt’s superb effort helped Bohemians defeat 10-man Shamrock Rovers in the Dublin Derby at Dalymount Park tonight.

Dylan Watts received a second yellow with just 20 minutes to play for a deliberate pull down, and within two minutes Bohs took the lead through Burt’s edge of the box right footed curling effort, to the delight of Dalymount.

Pre-game as the teams walked out with Rovers being met with a chorus of boos initially, Ronan Finn emerged from the tunnel with a wreath which was presented to Bohemians in memory of Bohs legend Derek Monaghan, which was met with great respect in return by the Dalymount faithful. A great touch from both sides in memory of a great club volunteer.

The opening half an hour of the game were scrappy as both teams tried to feel their way into the game. Shamrock Rovers had the majority of the ball but struggled to create much by way of major chances. Aaron Greene had a header go straight at McCracken. Greene, Gaffney, and Watts also had a couple of efforts that did not cause any trouble.

Both teams would be happy to go in at the break level, Rovers controlled the majority of the ball and looked the most likely to get the breakthrough but from a Bohemians perspective, they did not face too much of a test.

The opening seconds of the second half were a reminder that we were witnessing a derby as Ali Coote immediately ran and barged a Rovers midfielder off the ball, and got booked.

Twardek and Cleary were both booked for rash challenges in the middle of the park as the game started to get feisty. Both sets of fans began to get behind their teams as a result.

With coming up to 20 minutes to go the game flipped on its head. Dylan Watts received a second yellow moments after being booked the first time for a deliberate pull down preventing a Bohs attack, which he or Rovers could really have no complaints about.

Rovers now needed to try to secure a draw to keep some daylight between them and their chasing competitors for the title but Bohemians had other ideas.

Up stepped Liam Burt who with an incredible first touch to make the space picked his spot in the far right side netting and buried the ball past Alan Mannus to give the Gypsies the lead and send Dalymount wild with the prospect of a first Derby win this season.

Rovers ran the bench as they tried to chase a point late in the game but to no avail as they faced an extra man and what must have felt like thousands more with the Bohs fans in full voice.
