Match Report
Bragging rights for Rovers in Dalymount
Shamrock Rovers continued their season’s turnaround with an emphatic 2-0 win in the Dublin Derby.
Rovers found themselves in uncharted territory compared to recent seasons, going into this historic fixture as the underdogs. After a cagey opening period at Dalymount Park the visitors grew into the game and began to show flashes of the team that has dominated the league for the last three years.
Bohs got off to a fiery start, the resurgent Ali Coote again proving a bright spark. Coote nearly placed his side in the lead when Dylan Connoly pulled the ball back for his late run, Coote’s shot just grazing past the bottom-left-hand corner.
The Scotsman reveled in the number 10 position, slicing through the Rovers’ defence and finding the on rushing Connoly who was brilliantly denied by a last-ditch tackle from Lee Grace.
Around the half-hour mark The Hoops began to find their footing in the match. Graham Burke flashed a ball into the box from the left wing, Krystian Nowak nearly putting it into his own net, James Talbot reacting quickly to get down well and save his defender’s blushes.
Jack Byrne was determined to not be overshadowed by Coote as the standout creative lynchpin consistently producing dangerous looping passes over the Bohs’ defense for Rory Gaffney to run on to. A perfectly placed cross from a corner met the rising head of Sean Hoare, whos effort cracked the bar and left The Gypsies desperately scrambling for a clearance.
The deadlock was broken at the brink of half-time when Burke switched the play to the right and found Byrne on the edge of the box. Byrne flicked the ball on to Neil Farrugia who nodded home at the front post to grab his first goal of the season.
Rovers got out of the gates well in the second half, the last 45 minutes essentially proving to be one-way traffic. Markus Poom went close just after the restart, his deflected effort outside of the box just sizzling past Talbot’s right post.
Bohs continually struggled to deal with set pieces and it proved to be their eventual undoing, when in the 65th minute, Byrne produced an in-swinging free kick that found Gaffney six yards out, the Tuam man finishing from a razor-tight angle to make it 2-0.
Rovers cruised home from that point on, and will hope to make it a perfect three from three post international-break when they welcome UCD to Tallaght on Monday.
Bohs, who still remain on top of the league, will make the long trip up north to face off against fellow title rivals Derry City.

A double-header subsitution for Rovers, as Burke and Gaffney come off for Kenny and Nugent.
Coote limps off after suffering what looks like a dead leg. Williams replaces him.
A 1-2 between Burke and Gaffney lays Gaffney off ten yeards out, who goes for a slightly misguided dink that's overhit and goes out for a goalkick.
2-0 Rovers! Gaffney scores from a tight angle following a set piece.
Radkowski receives a booking after bringing down Burke.
McManus becomes the fifth player to be carded.
McManus comes on to the delight of the home fans.
The cards are starting to get dished out! Cleary booked for interfering with Talbot's kick-out.
Grace booked for a crunching tackle on Connolly.
Rovers out the gates well, Burke lashing a shot from outside of the box that just misses the target.
And we're back underway! Buckely immediately carded after bringing down Farrugia 25 yards out from goal.
Half-time in Dalymount. After a nervy opening period Rovers eventually found their footing in the match and became the dominant side, Neil Farrugia's header putting his team in the driving seat at half-time.
Goal! Byrne finds the ball on the right-hand-side and puts in a quick cross that reaches Farrugia at the front post who nods home for his first goal of the season!
Penalty shouts for Rovers as Farrugia darts past Kirk and falls to the ground. Referee Robert Harvey deems there's not enough contact for a spot kick to be given.
Sean Hoare leaps up for a corner and heads onto the bar, Bohs eventually clearing. Rovers have really grown into this game after a cagey opening period.
Burke flashes a ball across the Bohs box from the left wing. Krystian Nowak gets some contact on the ball and very nearly puts the ball in his own net, Talbot reacting well to get down quickly and prevent the Pole\'s blushes.
The pace of the game has just cooled down slightly after what was a pretty fiery opening twenty minutes.
Byrne sends another ball over the top for Gaffney to run on to, Gaffney just unable to catch the ball before it runs out for a Bohs goal kick.
Lee Grace finds himself overextending for a ball that's picked up by Connoly on the byline. Connoly plays Coote into the box, the Scotsman unable to find enough force to put the ball past Alan Mannus.
Coote picks up the ball just over the half-way line and produces a ball that slices through the Rovers defence. Dylan Connoly runs on to it and has a brilliant chance to put his team ahead, Lee Grace producing a superbly timed tackle to deny the shot.
Coote's off to a lively start, exploiting the acres of spaces he's finding in the final third and stringing Bohs attacks together nicely.
Dylan Connoly latches onto an over the-top ball and pulls it back for Ali Coote who makes a late run into the box. Coote's shot is oh so close, just grazing past the bottom right corner.
Jack Byrne puts in a looping ball from the right hand-side that nearly finds Rory Gaffney in the centre of the box but instead is collected by James Talbot.
And things have gotten underway in Dalymount!
Bohs fans will be disappointed to see young starlet James McManus starting on the bench. The Gypsies' captain Keith Buckley returns to the starting XI following after a month-long hiatus induced by a calf injury. Markus Poom makes his first start for Rovers in over a month and will hope to provide forwards Rory Gaffney and Graham Burke with plenty of chances.
It's Bohs manager Declan Devine's first Dublin Derby, and it's a game the former Derry man is relishing. Speaking to club media, he said: "I’ve been involved with games against PSG, Gothenburg, Celtic and Rangers, but a Dublin derby, being involved with Bohemians and getting to know the club and its people over the past few months, is something I am really looking forward to and the players are looking forward to. It’s another game, nothing will be decided other than three points. But we want a performance that represents this football club and everyone involved in it."
Rovers had to wait until last weekend to pick up their first win of the season. They've been consistently dogged by their inability to see out games they've dominated, but The Hoops will hope their fortunes are on the mend after that 4-0 victory over Dundalk. Manager Stephen Bradley is well aware that this in-form Bohs squad could set them back to square one: "We need to go and perform like we have been and we need to focus, " he said. "Games like this can be decided on the small details and small margins. We need to do everything possible to make sure that we come out on the right side of them."
The match holds a lot importance for the league at large, as it's the first LOI match to ever be broadcasted on Virgin Media. If the ratings are good, it wouldn't be outside the realms of possibility to see some more games ending up on Virgin before the end of the season.
Welcome along to tonight's match report of Bohemians vs Shamrock Rovers! This Dublin Derby is set to be a cracker and sees Bohs coming into the games as favourites, leading the league table while Rovers languish down in sixth place. But as the old cliché goes, form may very well go out the window in a match of this stature!
