Rovers Women Secure Emphatic Derby Win Over Bohs
Shamrock Rovers Women celebrated their return to the Dublin Derby after an eight-year hiatus with an emphatic 4-0 victory in Tallaght this evening.
Goals from Jessica Gargan, Áine O’Gorman and Abbie Larkin helped The Hoops climb up to second in the league table.
Jessica Gargan opened up her side's account with a strong header in the 23rd minute, an Áine O’Gorman spot-kick and tidy finish from Abbie Larkin making it 3-0 on the brink of half-time.
Bohemians' attack proved blunt and starved of creativity as they attempted to pull the game back, O’Gorman adding a fourth for The Hoops when she finished off a cross from Larkin at point-blank range.
The home side were the far more dominant outfit from the gun, enjoying all of the possession and repeatedly benefiting from switches of play, the Bohs defence finding themselves completely stretched and disorientated whenever Áine O’Gorman lofted the ball over to Lia O’Leary’s left flank.
An early chance for Rovers nearly saw Jaime Thomspon make it 1-0, O’Leary dinking in a cross that was put back by Jessica Hennesy into Thompson’s path, her shot not lacking in pace but instead accuracy as it flew past Rachael Kelly’s left post.
Despite the run of play, there was slight cause for concern for Collie O’Neill’s side as Sarah Rowe routinely found joy breaking in behind what was a slightly disorganised Rovers backline, Rowe unable to muster up any true moments of danger.
Any anxieties were quickly quelled in the 23rd minute, when Thomspon whipped in a dangerous cross from a free-kick, Gargan towering above The Gypises’ defence and nodding the ball home to give The Hoops a 1-0 advantage.
Bohemians’ blunt attack posed Rovers’ defence little threat, and soon the Phibsboro outfits woes were doubled, when Niamh Prior handled a cross from another Thompson free-kick, referee Mark Houlihan pointing to the spot instantly.
Captain Áine O’Gorman showcased her wealth of experience from twelve yards out, sending Kelly the wrong way, burying the ball decisively in the bottom-left corner.
Minutes later it was 3-0, O’Gorman producing a beautifully weighted ball that sliced through the Bohs defence like a knife through butter, Abbie Larkin latching on to the ball and slotting her effort across Kelly’s goal into the bottom right.
The run of play stayed virtually the same after the break, O’Gorman doubling her tally when she slotted home a Larkin cross from point-blank range. From there Rovers cruised home, unchallenged from a Bohs’ side starved of any creative spark.
Attendance in Tallaght charted at 1,107, a new LOIW record, in what’s been another positive sign of growth from the league this season.
Rovers will head to PLR Park to face Peamount in a potential title race six-pointer, The Hoops sitting two points shy of The Peas with a game in hand.
Bohemians will welcome Sligo to Dalymount, and attempt to ignite some much-needed momentum (The Gypsies have failed to pick up two wins in a row this season), Pat Trehy’s side surely relishing their chances against a side that currently resides dead last in the table without a point to their name.

Full-time in Tallaght. Shamrock Rovers 4-0 Bohemians.
A brilliant headed clearance from Ciara Maher blocks McEvoy's goal bound shot.
Abbie Larkin rewarded the player of the match, the number seven having turned in a truly classy display having routinely given the Bohs defence nightmares throughout.
Garagan comes off for debutant Aoibe Fleming, Hennesy also off for Abby Tuthill.
Some technical difficulties in Tallaght, as the sprinklers go on during play!
Attendance tonight is 1,107, a new LOIW record!

O'Mahony is replaced by Mellisa O'Kane.
Lynn Craven comes on for Rachel Doyle.
Goal! Larkin sends in a ball from the right flank, her cross somehow drifts right over countless Bohs' heads, O'Gorman connecting with it and finishing from point-blank range.
A good opportunity for Bohs as Prior sends in a cross that catches Erin Brophy who fails to get proper contact on the ball and sees her effort loop over the Rovers' bar.
Rovers continue to dicate the tempo after the break, McCarthy replacing O'Leary to form a more traditional back four.
The hosts get the action back underway in Tallaght.
Half-time in Tallaght Stadium. Shamrock Rovers 3-0 Bohemians.
Goal! O'Gorman slices through the Bohs defence with a pitch-perfect pass, Larkin latching on to the end of it and placing it across Kelly's goal with a composed finished.
Goal! O'Gorman sends Rachael Kelly the wrong way and slots the ball home in the bottom left-hand corner.
Penalty! A Thompson free kick sees the ball hit off Niamh Prior's hand, referee Mark Houlihan immediately pointing to the spot.
Dodd cuts in from the left and goes for a curling effort, her shot blocked and out for a corner.
One would suspect it should be cruise control for Rovers from here on out, Bohs having sight of goal just once in the opening thirty minutes.
Goal! An inswinging Jaime Thompson cross from a free kick finds the head of Garagan who towers over the Bohs' defence to nod the ball home and give her side the lead.
Despite Rovers being unquestionably the better side so far, there've been signs that Bohs have been able to exploit a potentially liable Rovers backline, Sarah Rowe getting a lot of joy with her runs in behind, yet to muster up a serious threat to Amanda Budden's goal so far.
Thompson takes the ball on the turn on the edge of the box, firing a shot over the bar.
O'Gorman switches the play nicely over to McEvoy on the left flank, her subsequent cross headed out for a corner.
Lia O'Leary floats a dangerous ball into the Bohs box that\'s then laid off by Gragan into the path of the incoming Jaime Thompson. Thompson gets a solid connection but her shot strays just wide of the post and goes out for a goal kick.
The ball's given away carelessly by O'Mahony in the midfield and Burke's presented the chance to break through on goal, weaving past Shauna Fox but having the ball pinched off her by Jessica Gargan.
Rovers break with pace and are rewarded with a corner Lia O'Leary has a cross blocked.
The weather's cleared up for kick-off but heavy rain is to be expected in Tallaght at some point this evening.
And we're underway in Tallaght!
Ireland international Savannah McCarthy starts on the Rovers bench. She made her first return to the field last weekend, recovering from an ACL injury that left her out of action for the better part of a year. O'Neill says he's delighted to have the former Galway star back in the fold: "We’ve seen the work that she’s put in and how dedicated she has been to try to get back onto that pitch. So, I think everybody was very happy to see her back, and she did well too. I think she’s going to be very important for us this season.”
Both sides' line-ups remain completely unchanged from their last run-outs.
Bohs come into the game well-rested, their last match a conclusive 3-0 win over DLR Waves at the tail end of March. Strike partners Erica Burke and Sarah Rowe both scored, as each will look to make an impression in the clash and attempt to break into Vera Pauw's World Cup panel.
O'Neill insisted there were positives to take from the game, including the continued rise of youngster Jaime Thompson: “It is a tough place to go [Galway] so there are some positives to take out of it. Jamie has continued on where she left off before the international break and another positive is that we continued to play the right way, even though we went behind. We didn’t panic, we didn’t change our style of play. We stuck to what we know best and we got a goal out of it.”
Rovers come off a 1-1 draw against Galway United in Eamon Deacy Park that dented The Hoops' title charge. Manager Collie O'Neill was left feeling frustrated after the result: "We created enough chances to go and win the game. When you look at the stats on it, I think we had 16 attempts on goal and they only had 8…You can have all the possession and all the stats that you want, it’s about how many times you put it in the back of the net. That’s the one that counts and that’s probably the one where we just need a little bit of luck at times.”
Welcome along to tonight's match report of Shamrock Rovers vs Bohemians here in Tallaght. An undefeated Rovers side squad squares off against a promising Bohs team in what's the first Dublin Derby in the LOIW since Rovers' exit from the league in 2015.
