Match Report

Drogs get vital point off Rovers at Weavers Park

Drogheda United held Shamrock Rovers to a goalless draw as Kevin Doherty’s men took another vital in aiding their fight for survival in the League of Ireland.

The opening period saw the match pan out almost exactly as anticipated, Rovers lapping up the majority of possession but struggling to build up out of a tenacious Drogheda press that prevented any clear sights on goal for most of the first half.

Drogheda’s issues with squad depth were further exemplified tonight, the loss of Freddie Draper seeing Ryan Brennan move up to the front line, the midfielder having also played as a make-shift centre back so far this season.

The opening 45 minutes proved to be a somewhat drab affair, Graham Burke’s fizzed effort from outside of the box in the opening 10 minutes proving to be the only shot on target of the first half.

It seemed clear that each side were missing the key instruments in their respective game plans, Drogheda lacking the hold-up play of Draper to bring other players into the mix during their attempted counter-attacks, while Rovers’ midfield without the injured Gary O’Neill and Jack Byrne looked uninspired and hapless in breaking the lines and accelerating the pace of the game.

Dylan Watts went close to putting Rovers ahead immediately after the restart, a scramble in the box seeing the ball deflected off Luke Heeney and falling to Dylan Watts on the edge of the box who’s effort cracked Andrew Wogan’s crossbar before falling out of play.

Luke Heeney was denied a potential goal-of-the-season candidate minutes later, producing a fierce effort from 35 yards out that looked destined for the top right corner before eventually smashing off the post.

As the minutes passed Rovers began to pile on the pressure, Drogheda wilting slightly due to their intense running in the early stages. However the hosts held out to the final whistle, Emmanuel Adegboyega putting in an inspired performance as he denied Johnny Kenny and Rory Gaffney an inch of space.

The draw cements Drogheda’s reputation as Rovers’ bogey team-The Hoops having failed to beat them inside regular time in their last seven matches.

Drogheda prepare for another important clash in their fight for survival, traveling to UCD next Friday.

The pressure mounts on Shamrock Rovers as their league lead remains under threat as St. Patrick’s Athletic continue their resurgence under Jon Daly. Stephen Bradley’s men will now be forced to juggle their title defence with European qualifiers that begin next Tuesday against Breiðablik. Their next LOI fixtures comes in nearly a month’s time when they play Cork in Tallaght Stadium.

A counter attack sees Darragh Markey break into the box and is subsequently brought down by Graham Burke who goes shoulder to shoulder with Markey. Referee Kevin O'Sullivan waves the Drogheda players' claims away and it looks to be the correct call on replay.

  • 13'

Burke fizzes a shot from outside of the box that's hit with pace. The effort's directed straight at Andrew Wogan in goal who doesn't handle it convincingly, the ball spilling from his hands before eventually collecting moments later.

  • 9'

The game panning out as expected so far-Rovers lapping up most of the ball but not able to create many dangerous chances given Drogheda's tenacious pressing.

  • 4'

Drogheda's paper-thin squad depth exemplified by Ryan Brennan leading the line for the hosts-as well as playing as a forward, the midfielder has also been forced to play as a makeshift centre back this season.

  • 1'

Shamrock Rovers get proceedings underway in Weaver's Park!

  • Some technical issues involving the goal netting means we'll be getting a slightly delayed kick-off.

  • Drogs' new signing Jamie Egan starts on the bench tonight while Adam Foley leads the line and attempts to fill the chasm Draper's absence has left in the side. Jack Byrne remains out of the Rovers squad for the second week in a row despite Bradley insisting the midfielder had recovered from the knock that kept him out against Dundalk. Lee Grace and Gary O'Neill are also out of the squad with injury, while Conan Noonan makes a rare start in the midfield.

  • Rovers\\\' boss Stephen Bradley knows his team\\\'s poor record against Drogheda this season may linger on their minds, their first meeting ending in a 1-1 draw with two Rovers\\\' red cards. Speaking ahead of the match, Bradley said: \\\"We know we’ll have a difficult game, but if you offer us the performance that we had against Drogheda in Tallaght, we’ll take it, with a different outcome. If we bring that level of performance we won’t be too far away.” “Drogheda’s game has always been to defend deep and play in transition and they have been good at that against certain teams and won games that way, we know how that’s they play as well as being efficient in the final third, and we have to respect that and be good in those moments. We controlled the majority of the game in Tallaght but we weren’t good in those moments and they punished us.”

  • Drogs' last match finished a 1-1 draw with Cork City in Turner's Cross, Doherty believing the game was a microcosm of the entire season, a promising displayed soured by a lack of cutting edge and clinical finishing. "When you look at the key chances, I don’t think they [Cork] had many,” he said after the game. “Similar to last week and the week before, we had some really, really good chances to kill the game.”

  • Drogheda have struggled for form as of late, picking up just six points since that win over Rovers in May. Doherty's already thin squad has been dealt has a further blow with the recall of Freddie Draper and Elicha Ahui from their respective loan spells, the signing of Bristol City's Jamie Egan offering temporary respite.

  • Evening folks and welcome along to tonight's match coverage of Drogheda United vs Shamrock Rovers. Drogheda came out the victors the last time the two sides met, Kevin Doherty's men pulling off a spectacular 2-1 win in Tallaght Stadium. The Hoops will hope to make amends for that loss this evening as well as attempt to recover from a slight wobble in form, last week's 2-0 loss to Dundalk shaving their league lead down to four points with St. Patrick's Athletic hot in pursuit.
