Match Report
Drogheda United struck late through Ryan Brennan to draw with nine-man Shamrock Rovers in Weavers Park tonight. The game did not produce much in the first half but the second sparked into life when McCabe failed to deal with a corner that fell to Graham Burke who scored. Rovers completely lost discipline as the half went on with Lee Grace and Daniel Cleary both picking up second yellow cards before the 80th minute. Ryan Brennan smashed across the keeper into the far left corner as the clock was ticking into the red to equalise. Shamrock Rovers had the first major chance of the game on the ten minute mark. Johnny Kenny was slipped in down the left hand side and his left footed effort was saved by the feet of keeper McCabe. Drogs were dealt an early blow with defender Ben Curtis being subbed off injured before the 15th minute with Adegboyega replacing him. Rovers were reduced to multiple efforts from range up until about the half hour mark, with five efforts across the half but nothing to cause major trouble in a game that was struggling to find a flow. Lee Grace was booked moments before the break as Draper looked to be in but Grace sliding managed to halt him. Drogs almost took the lead through Keeley who had the ball fall to his feet but a weak effort found the hands of a thankful Mannus. This was the last effort of the half as the sides went in scoreless. Rovers came out much better to start the second half. Graham Burke struck the woodwork from close range, it looked like McCabe was beaten but the woodwork kept his perfect start to the season intact. Rovers took the lead in the 53rd minute. A corner coming in from the left was poorly met by McCabe who punched backwards and although one of his defenders kept it off the line Graham Burke was on hand to poke home from a couple yards out. The Hoops looked comfortable but in an almost identical scenario to last week, Rovers saw red with a defender at the 70 minute mark. This time it was Lee Grace who picked up a second yellow for a late tackle at the edge of the area. Dayle Rooney almost levelled the game from the resulting free kick but the ball ricocheted off the post and into the arms of an extremely grateful Mannus. Rovers were reduced to nine men in the 80th minute as Daniel Cleary slammed the ball off the floor and picked up a stupid yellow card, then moments later made a late tackle to pick up a second yellow. Rovers third defensive red card in just two games. The Hoops were using every trick in the book to see the time fade away from the hosts who were desperate for their first goal of the season. However the hosts did finally give the home fans something to celebrate as Ryan Brennan picked up the ball in the box and smashed with his right low and hard across Mannus and into the corner in the final minute of regulation. Drogheda pushed to get a late winner and despite successive corners and a lack of Rovers defensive presence they managed to hold on and come away with a point.
