Match Report

Drogs Stun Hoops In Tallaght Upset

Underdogs Drogheda United pulled off a huge upset to defeat Shamrock Rovers 2-1 in Tallaght, goals from Freddie Draper and Dayle Rooney leaving The Hoops stunned.

Draper put his side in the lead at the brink of half-time, squaring Lee Grace up in the box before dropping the shoulder and unleashing a deadly finish across Leon Pohls’ goal.

Rooney made it two in the 58th minute taking down an inch-perfect Luke Heeney cross, finishing cooly. Those two goals were enough to see out the win, Rory Gaffney giving his side a lifeline they were unable to capitalise on when he finished off a rebound in the 80th minute.

The best chance in the opening half-hour fell to Rovers, Richie Towell threading a smart ball through to Ireland call-up Neil Farrugia who drew a diving from Colin McCabe between the sticks. The ball was soon left in limbo, Rory Gaffney eventually mustering a shot but was left rueing his placement when his effort was cleared off the line by Aaron McNally.

Drogheda did well to keep the league leaders at bay for the most part, suffocating The Hoops with some diligent defending. Despite the positive signs, there may have been some anxiety lingering amongst Keith Doherty’s men that the game may turn into the same old story-a positive opening period undone by the squad’s paper-thin depth. That shallow depth was exemplified pre-match, Drogs only able to list seven substitutes, their five outfielders consisting almost exclusively of their under-19 squad.

Those anxieties were dispelled and instead replaced with instant elation, Freddie Draper putting the visitors ahead at the brink of half-time. It was a smash-and-grab goal, Conor Keeley lumping up a long ball that was taken down by Draper in the Rovers’ box, the Lincoln loanee squaring up Lee Grace before dropping the left shoulder and unleashing a deadly finish across Leon Pohls’ goal and into the bottom corner.

It went from good to great for Drogheda in the second half, going 2-0 up in the 58th minute when Luke Heeney broke down the right wing and lifted in an inch-perfect cross for Dayle Rooney. Rooney killed the ball with his first touch and lashed the ball into the bottom right-hand corner with his second, the home fans left stunned.

Rovers went in pursuit of a life-line but to no avail, Graham Burke forcing an acrobatic save from McCabe who was forced to leap high to tip Burke’s left-footed volley over the bar. Minutes later Gaffney drilled a shot across Drogheda’s goal, McCabe again denying the shot, this time with his outstretched left boot.

Gaffney gave Rovers an ounce of hope, firing home from point-blank range in a goal line. A fiery atmosphere built up in Tallaght as Drogheda began to indulge in the dark arts with joy, the ball increasingly spending more and more time out of play. Pico Lopes’ header in the 90th minute proved to be Rovers’ golden opportunity, his effort falling inches wide of goal.

The Hoops fall down to second in league standings after tonight’s result. They make the trip down to Turners Cross next week, facing up against a Cork City side in the midst of a relegation battle.

Drogheda prepare for a must-win game next week, welcoming UCD to Weaver’s Park, three points vital to build up a cushion in between the drop zone.

  • Shamrock Rovers make two changes from their last outing on Monday night, Sean Hoare coming in for Daniel Cleary at centre-half, Trevor Clarke returning from suspension to replace Ronan Finn.

  • Drogheda's injury woes exemplified by the fact they have just six players listed on their bench. The Louth outfit receive some marginal respite as Emmanuel Adegboyega returns to the starting XI from suspension.

  • Doherty expressed his disappointment again after the Pats game, speaking to LOITV: "We’ve been unlucky every time for the last three of four weeks… The lads played really well but I’m sort of sick of that, playing really well and getting beat. “There’s no point in saying ‘we were good at this, we were good at that’, the game’s about putting the ball in the back of the net… it’s really really disappointing but we have to get over it and move on.”

  • Drogheda's match against Pats can be seen as emblematic of their whole season, Drogheda having formed a habit of competing in games admirably but routinely failing to convert solid performances into points on the board. Manager Keith Doherty described his side's inability to see out games "as simply heartbreaking."

  • The last time the two sides met, Drogheda snatched a point at the last minute against a nine-man Rovers side. Bradley expects a difficult game against Drogheda, despite their patchy form so far this campaign: “I’ve no doubt they’ll be tough opposition like they always are. When you watch their recent games, the scoreline can be a bit misleading,” he said. “They’ll come with a game plan to make it difficult. We’ve got to respect that and be ready for that.”

  • Their win over Pats marked six wins in a row for Shamrock Rovers. Speaking on the game, manager Stephen Bradley said: “It was a good win. I said on the night that I think we deserved it and when you look at it back, I still feel that way. “It was important to keep the run going but I think our overall play deserved it…And when you look at the chances we created, we definitely deserved to win the game.\"

  • Evening folks and welcome along to tonight's coverage of Shamrock Rovers vs Drogheda United. Rovers took control of league standings this day last week and bolstered their position with a blockbuster 3-2 win over St. Patrick's Athletic. Their opposition tonight sit just above the drop zone in eight place, Drogs struggling to maintain consistent results with an extensive injury list. Their last match saw them go toe-to-toe with Pats in Richmond Park, before their relentless press began to falter, conceding three goals in the last 10 minutes.
