Match Report
Bohs beat Shels in North Dublin Derby
Jonathan Afolabi’s fifth goal in five games proved to be the difference as Bohs knocked their Dublin rivals Shelbourne out of the Sports Direct FAI Cup.
Afolabi’s goal came in the 31st minute and it was no more than the home side deserved. Shels had a good claim for a penalty turned down minutes later, much to the annoyance of manager Damien Duff.
The first half was a typical feisty cup affair but the second half didn’t produce too much of note.
Jack Moylan tested Bohs keeper James Talbot in the 2nd minute. The home side then took a hold on the game. In the third minute Flores’ well struck free brought a fine save out of Shels netminder Conor Kearns.
Bohs thought they could’ve had a penalty in the sixth minute after James McManus’ strike came off Paddy Barrett. The ball came back out to James Akintunde, he played it over to McManus but he shot just inches wide.
James Clarke hit his shot wide in the 14th minute after some good play from Dylan Connolly. Evan Caffrey’s free in the 18th minute was dealt with by Bohs while four minutes later Sean Boyd’s shot was well wide.
In the 30th minute Kearns brought off an excellent save to deny Clarke. One minute later Bohs took the lead when Afolabi was allowed a free header from a Jordan Flores corner.
Minutes later Shels had viable claims for a penalty turned down after the ball appeared to bounce up and hit McManus’ hand. In the 41st minute Shels won their first corner of the game. From the corner Barrett’s strike came off his own player and Bohs were able to clear.
Shels were brighter in the early stages of the second half but failed to trouble Talbot. Chances were scarce in the second half. In the 75th minute Afolabi got into a good position, he passed to Clarke who brought a good save out of Kearns.
Both managers emptied their bench as they went in search of a goal. Shels applied pressure but the home side defended well as the clock ticked down. They forced Bohs into the concession of a number of corners but they couldn’t get an equaliser.
