Match Report

Stapleton Brace Gives North Side Bragging Rights To Shelbourne

Two Jessie Stapleton goals in the first half, helped secure a second consecutive win for defending champions Shelbourne as they claimed victory in the North Side Derby this afternoon.

Shels centre half was a threat in the area as both of her efforts came from set pieces that were whipped in by the dangerous left foot of Megan Smyth Lynch, as she caused serious threat all afternoon.

Bohs had little chances but Rachael Kelly and Lisa Murphy were solid at the back, both doing the hard work in those final minutes to ensure they only lost by two.

It was a very cagey start, the driving rain not making it an attractive afternoon setting for these two rivals to do battle in Dalymount Park, Shels attacked with intent, an early corner saw Kayla Hamric send an effort just over.

Bohs had possession but failed to really ask questions of the Shelbourne backline in the opening exchanges, Shels meanwhile could get into areas but failed to really test the goal the best effort coming to Kerri Letmon on her first start since joining from DLR Waves, her strike being deflected out for a corner.

From their second set piece of the day Jessie Stapleton would hit the break through, Megan Smyth-Lynch delivered off the left boot from the right hand side and the in swinger fell perfectly onto the head of Stapleton, as she guided it goal bound to beat Rachael Kelly and give Shelbourne an early 1-0 lead in the derby after 18 minutes.

The defending champions did not let off after that early goal, Letmon hit the side netting while Alex Kavanagh was on the end of a beautifully crafted piece of link up play but Ciara Maher did well to block her shot and send it out for a corner which came to nothing.

Shels would grab their second goal after 37 minutes and it came after some chaos on the goal line, Smyth-Lynch again with another left footed delivery into the area coming from a free kick, Kelly came out to claim it but failed to secure the ball, she palmed it to the back post and Stapleton was there to get a touch that managed to cross the goal line to grab Shelbourne their second goal of the contest.

Into the dying minutes of the second half Hamric caused serious pressure from distance as she had to efforts to make it a 3-0 scoreline for Shelbourne, Kelly was needed to tip over a dipping effort from range, before on the stroke of half time she struck another effort that pinged off the Bohs crossbar and went out of play, Shelbourne looked strong in that opening 45 and fully deserve their 2-0 lead at the interval.

Into the second half and chances were few and far between as the rain began to bucket down, Fiona Donnelly tried her luck to strike from range one of very few times Courtney Maguire was summoned into action but the shot was tame.

Kavanagh had the ball in the Bohs net in the 65th minute but that goal was ruled out for an offside as the hosts were able to breathe a sigh of relief, an attraction on the sideline occurred just after with referee Mark Houlihan brandishing a red card for a member of the Bohemians backroom staff.

Hamric would again cause torment to the Bohs backline as she went in search of their third, the hunt was on by the Canadian who was causing issues, but Lisa Murphy did well to stop her getting in at goal, she would be called on again minutes later to prevent Noelle Murray having a strike at goal.

Inside the final ten minutes it was Kelly again who was called upon to keep the scoreline at just two goals for Shels, she got down quick to deny Hamric from close range, while Alex Kavanagh had time and space in the area just a minute later but Kelly again got down to palm the ball out for a corner.

In stoppage time Kelly was sprung into action once again as Ruvimbo Mucherera and Christie Gray two substitutes both linked up with Gray striking at goal but Kelly was again down quick to gather the effort. As Shels came out 2-0 winners in a cagey contested tie in Dalymount.

    Kick off In Dalymount

  • Sarah Rowe collects the ball and is getting ready to kick off, as the bus whizzes off for it's next journey

  • There's a new bus in town as the Dublin Bus special sponsored remote controlled little bus. delivers the match ball out to the centre circle for collection ahead of kick off, hope they brought their leapcards!

  • 15 minutes until kick off at Dalymount, Bohs will need to be alert from the off as chasing Shels from being behind early on would be a massive challenge, it is sure to be entertaining neither will want to lose her but it is still early days with plenty more twists and turns to happen

  • Shelbourne do make a change as Siobhan Killeen drops out of the squad with Kerri Letmon coming in to earn her first start in a Shels shirt since moving from DLR Waves, no place on the bench for Rebecca Devereux who became the youngest ever senior goal scorer for Shel's across their men's and women's teams, Jenaya Robertsaon also does not feature on the bench, in come Lea Doyle, Gemma Quinn and Leah Reilly

  • In team news, the hosts go unchanged from the win over Treaty in their starting lineup, however from the bench the last day, Katie Burdis and Izzy Chambers both do not feature in the matchday squad, with Lea Hughes, Sophine Hanlon and Sadhbh Moran all coming into the bench

  • Shelbourne will be the favourites in this tie as they chase a third straight league title, but Bohemians are no slouches in the league, plenty of quality names in their squad and they will make this tie competitive, but if Shels are awarded chances they have the attacking threat to snatch goals

  • Both sides won their opening ties to kick off the 2023 season, Shels however did it in more emphatic fashion with a 6-0 win over Cork at Tolka Park, Bohs meanwhile needed a Rachel Doyle penalty to overcome Treaty United 1-0 on Shannonside

  • The rain is falling at Dalymount Park, but that will not dampen this North Side Derby as Shelbourne look to keep up an unbeaten start and make early headway for a third straight league title, while Bohemians will not want to suffer a defeat on their home patch, a win would be a huge scalp and also show their intent to be at the top of the table, my name is Diarmuid Kearney and I will be reporting on this afternoon's fixture
