Shels deal Bohs first loss in Dublin Derby

Derby delight for Duff as super sub Leavy’s strike ensures Shelbourne bragging rights.

Kian Leavy’s brilliant second half goal resulted in Shelbourne picking up their first three points of the season in a typical Dublin fiery affair beating rivals Bohemian’s 1-0 at Tolka Park.

It was a first half of few chances. Shelbourne dominated the early stages, but the best chance of the opening period fell to the visitors when striker Jonathan Afolabi spun Shelbourne defender Paddy Barrett, but his dangerous cross across goal couldn’t be guided home at the back post by the onrushing Dylan Connolly.

Jack Moylan and Evan Caffrey were the hosts danger men in the first half and everything positive seemed to come through them. With all the dangerous areas they found themselves in, the hosts lacked a natural poacher to feed off.

The Gypsies introduced James McManus at half-time in replace of Kirk and the young midfielder looked to get on the ball and get his team moving. The visitors started the restart much better, but like their counterparts in the first, struggled to create anything clear cut.

The second half saw a multitude of yellow cards for both sides and Shelbourne manager Damian Duff who celebrated his birthday during the week with a booking.

Everything changed with just over 20 minutes to go. Dylan Connolly broke from his own box, driving at the sole Shelbourne defender J R Wilson and had the assistance of striker Afolabi inside him. Instead of freeing his teammate, he opted to continue driving and a heavy touch allowed Wilson to slide in with a crunching tackle, much to the delight of the fullback who celebrated it like a goal. This clearly antagonised Connolly who jumped up and seemed to barge Wilson over with his elbow outright, leading to a scuffle before the winger was given his marching orders.

That didn’t seem to affect the visitors who continued to knock the ball about well. However, in the 78th minute, substitute Kian Leavy on-loan from Reading cut inside, faked an attempt, before unleashing a venomous rocket that flew past James Talbot into the bottom corner to send Tolka Park wild.

The hosts hung on in the end and survived a late scare when Boh’s won a free-kick 25-yards out, but Jordan Flore’s attempt sailed over the bar.

Duff’s men now move onto Dundalk this coming Monday in Oriel Park, whilst Boh’s travel to Drogheda.

Great atmosphere inside Tolka. A long ball over the top from Shels keeper Conor Kearns nearly frees Jack Moylan in behind but, Buckley recovers to send it out for a throw-in. From the resulting throw-in, Moylan jinks his way inside before winning a corner. Caffrey takes however Flores clears before Coyle's effort goes safely over.
