Match Report

Afolabi rescues point for Bohs at Shels

Second-half goals by Shelbourne’s Jack Moylan and Bohemians’ Jonathan Afolabi mean that neither side makes up ground on the teams above them after a 1-1 draw at Tolka Park this evening.

Jack Moylan opened the scoring after latching onto a parried effort by Jad Hakiki, before Jonathan Afolabi’s volley levelled proceedings in the North Dublin derby.

Damien Duff made two changes to the team that won 4-0 against UCD last week. Captain Luke Byrne came in to face his old side, with Evan Caffery also starting for the Reds. Kameron Ledwidge and Shane Farrell dropped to the bench.

Declan Devine kept faith in the side that heroically rallied from 2-1 down to win 3-2 over Dundalk at Dalymount last week.

The game began with an early deflected shot by Jordan Flores, which led to a corner for Bohs and an expected derby day shoving match between Shelbourne goalkeeper Conor Kearns and Bohemians midfielder Adam McDonnell ensued.

The corner created a lot of panic in the Shelbourne box and after a few phases of play, McDaid finds Radkowski at the back post. The Polish centre-half made good contact with his strike but his shot flew wide and into the side netting.

A series of cheap corner kicks were conceded by Bohemians and created great chances for the home side.

The first corner kick was a result of a mix-up between Keith Buckley and James Talbot which led to a great chance for Byrne to head just wide of the Bohemians' goal.

Kamil Radkowski was the next to sloppily give Shels a chance from a dead ball, and Caffrey’s delivery found the head of Gavin Molloy who headed just over.

Tidy play in the Shelbourne midfield by Jack Moylan created a great chance to break for the home team but Kristian Novak did just enough to take the ball away from the onrushing Sean Boyd, who didn’t see Jad Hakiki open at the back post.

Shelbourne were bossing the game and a number of dummies outside the box led to the ball falling at the feet of JJ Lunney but his shot was blocked out for a corner.

A huge chance for Bohemians would have had hearts in the mouths of the home faithful as a low ball found Dylan Connolly in the box but Kearns prevented his toe poke finding the back of the net.

A dangerously placed free kick for Bohemians ‘Jordan Flores’ range was taken by the Bohemians midfielder but his effort doesn't get enough dip and skims the top of the net.

After the break, another dangerous free-kick from Flores looked to be destined for the bottom corner but Kearns sprung to his left to palm the ball wide.

It took until the fifty-fifth minute for the deadlock to be broken and it was the home team that struck first. A long-range effort by Jad Hakiki was parried by Talbot into the path of Jack Moylan, who calmly slotted the ball past the onrushing Talbot, sending the home fans wild.

Bohemians were getting frustrated by this resolute Shelbourne side but the Gypsies almost levelled the game when Novak’s header was deflected off the back of Molloy and then onto the post before being cleared away out of the home side’s box.

Bohemians left it late again this week, and it was the man in form, Jonathan Afolabi that got the derby day goal yet again.

Connolly kept the ball alive inside the box and fed Buckley down the right. Buckley lofted a cross into the box where Afolabi powerfully fires on goal to equalise. Kearns got a hand on the ball but the power of the shot meant Kearns’s efforts were in vain.

Bohemians and Shelbourne remain in fifth and sixth respectively after yet another feisty Dublin derby.
