Match Report

Shamrock Rovers pick up first league victory over 10-man Dundalk

With a 4-0 victory over Dundalk at Oriel Park, Shamrock Rovers secured their first win this season. Rory Gaffney, Lee Grace, Johnny Kenny, and second-half substitute Graham Burke all scored for Stephen Bradley's team, who put the Lilywhites to the sword.

With Robbie Benson's red card midway through the first half, Dundalk's night became much more challenging. Dundalk had a forgettable night, but Stephen Bradley can now plan his next moves to progress up the table.

The first shot on goal was made by the visitors when Johnny Kenny slipped past the Dundalk defense, but the effort was shown at the very last second to be offside. Rory Gaffney's diving header from a long ball from the right was the catalyst for the Hoops' opening goal, which he expertly headed past Sheppard to give his team the lead.

Dundalk had a terrific opportunity to tie the score after a brilliant one-touch play past the Rover's defense, but John Martin's effort flew high over the crossbar. The situation only got worse for the home team when Robbie Benson was sent off for a high challenge on Lee Grace and Dundalk was reduced to ten men.

As a Byrne corner was met at the back post and headed forward, Lee Grace and John Martin engaged in a duel for the ball. Grace won the duel, and the ball slid past the diving Sheppard to give Rovers a double advantage.

Rory Gaffney had a chance to score for Rovers after Darragh Leahy's short pass caused them to break and allow them to get in sight of Nathan Sheppard, but his attempt missed and whistled past the post. Richie Towell caught a pass on the edge of the area right before halftime, but his shot also went wide.

Shamrock Rovers kept up the pressure as Dundalk lost possession in midfield with Byrnes pass the ball to Kenny at the back post, the striker's attempt to score went the wrong side of the post as he narrowly missed. Boyle's headed clearance dropped into Richie Towell's path, forcing Sheppard to save as he deflected the ball away for a corner. Richie Towell was then to return to haunt his former club.

As Johnny Kenny, who was unmarked, he met Towell's pinpoint cross at the back post to head it beyond Sheppard. Graham Burke scored Rovers' fourth goal by blasting the ball past Sheppard from close range.

Late in the game, Dundalk did have a chance, but it was cleared by a perfect Alan Mannus save. Keith Ward caught the ball on the outside of the box but his curling shot was superbly stopped. Dundalk's early season gallop comes to a shuddering halt.
