Match Report

Rovers Are First Past The Post against Dundalk

The moral of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is that experience and tradition provide greater stability. In the tale of the two cities of Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers experience proved the most valuable aspect.

Alan Mannus showed all his experience and stability to stave off a second-half Dundalk onslaught. He had to ride his luck and thank his goalframe for valuable assistance to ensure his side took all three points in a game that in reality could have had a different outlook had all those chances have gone in. Alessio Abibi on the other hand was called into action in key aspects of the game and didn’t look inspired as for both goals he should have done better.

“Alan is a top, top keeper he is a massive part of the club” quoted Ronan Finn after the game

This is Dundalk’s worst start to a league season since 2006 when Dundalk had zero points after three games. It also matches the worst start to a Premier Division season since 1998/99 when they also had one point from their opening three games. For Shamrock Rovers after dropping points in their first league game, it gives them the perfect opportunity to get their season underway with a game in hand.

The game wasn’t a minute old when Brian Gartland went down injured clutching his knee as he went down with no player around him, after being stretchered off fans of Dundalk in particular fear the worst for the defender. He was spotted later on in the stand, knee brace on and crutches in tow but his season will become clearer in the days to come.

Both sides had chances to open the scorning early on Chris McCann received the ball in the middle of the park and he aimed to test Abibi however the keeper equal to the shot tipped it over the bar. At the other end, Patrick Hoban went close when Michael Duffy broke free down the left and sent in a cross inviting the striker to attack, his sliding effort however was saved well by Mannus at close range, a tale of things to come.

The game for so early in the game saw the rhythm change minute from minute as the early aspects to a league game were shown, mislaid passes and a battle in the midfield ensued as both sides cancelled each other out. The lack of a crowd added to the factor that the bite needed to intensify the game was lacking due to lack of support. Chris Shields took down Burke for a free-kick that led to the opening goal of the game. A quickly taken free quick saw a clever one-two between Burke and Aaron Greene who set it up for Mandriou whose strike flew past Abibi. First blood to the home side and Shamrock Rovers looked to capitalise to put the game to bed before half time Graham Burke found himself one on one with the keeper but his chance was stopped after he attempted was blocked and cleared by Jurkovskis at the last second.

The second half saw in periods the siege on Shamrock Rovers after Dundalk beginning to use the width of the Tallaght pitch to exploit the high pressing game of Shamrock Rovers. Aaron Greene thought it was game set and match when he had the ball in the back of the net in the 46th minute and Dundalk sensing this game could get away from them turned the screw.

The first sign of intent from Dundalk came from Midtskogen whose low curling effort was well saved by Mannus. He would be called into action again as does excellently to save Duffy's high rising strike, while initial thoughts thought it struck his hand it ricochet off his shoulder. What is said about being at the top and being lucky?

Duffy had the beating of Mannus in his next attempt only for the crossbar to deny him, the Derry native finding more room to express himself was paying dividends however he was being denied at every turn. The frame of the goal was to deny Hoban next when a curling cross into the area was met by the striker only for it to cannon off the post.

Abibi was called to gather the ball on the second time of asking after a cross was sent in and he spilt the initial effort, Greene sensing the opportunity put the keeper under pressure but he gathered at the second chance of asking. Football fans of a certain vintage were having flashbacks of Massimo Taibi for a second.

At the other end, Allan Mannus was called in to pull off two saves in quick succession to deny Dundalk once more. The initial cross sent it saw Duffy strike on goal but Mannus did excellently to save and then almost immediately he had to deny a second attempt to tip it over.

Within a minute it was checkmate Rovers as Dylan Watts who had Dundalk players playing goalward from distance and Abibi who should have saved allowed the ball to go under him to extend Rovers lead to two.

‘Tale of two cities – a tale of two keepers’

Dundalk continued to press forward and once again were denied by the frame as the second ball sent in by Andy Boyle saw the Patrick Hoban headed goalwards but was once again denied by the post. In a matter of moments it finally paid off for Dundalk, Chris Shields curling cross was met by Hoban and he got his just rewards. It was a frustrating night for the striker but that is his second goal in two games, if this form is to change Hoban is to be one of the catalysts.

For Shamrock Rovers it’s a case of job done and mission accomplished despite the loss of Joey O’Brien and Roberto Lopes. For Dundalk, it’s to take comfort that despite hard work and stellar second-half performance, sheer bad luck denied them something from the game.
