LOI FD Preview: Treaty United v Athlone Town

Treaty United go in search of three wins on the bounce for the first time this season, as they entertain Athlone Town, who are also seeking the same feat.

This Shannonside rivals have clashed eight times in recent seasons, with Treaty winning four compared to a solitary Town success, which came in August 2022.

Following wins over Kerry, 4-0, and Bray Wanderers 3-0, Tommy Barrett will be happy with how his side responded to two defeats in three. Willie Armshaw contributed two from the bench at the Carlisle Grounds, giving the manager a selection dilemma here. Marc Ludden is nearing a return but the form of teenager Darren Nwankwo has impressed the Treaty faithful.

They are still without sub-keeper Conor Winn, but Shane Hallahan has found his feet with consecutive clean sheets. Mark Walsh, Success Edogun and Darren Collins look set to miss this clash. Ben O’Riordan and Alec Byrne are rated as doubtful.

Enda Curran, Edogun, Conor Barry and Dean George have all previously played with their Midland opponents.

Athlone Town will be looking to deal a blow to Treaty Untied’s play-off hunt, while further strengthening their own position in third place. Head-Coach Gordon Brett will have been impressed by the form of Haiti-native Frantz Pierrot who has netted six in three outings. They are now third highest scorers in the second-tier, with only Ronan Coughlan (14) scoring more than Pierrot’s nine.

Athlone have not won three on-the-spin for some time, though they did go five unbeaten in 2022, which included four wins.

These sides met earlier in the season with a Curran double enough to put Treaty 2-0 ahead, only for 10-man Athlone to snatch a draw with Isaie Louis and Noah Van Geenen on target late on.

  • 90'

    Four added.

  • 78'

Great pressure from Enda Curran and the keeper has to scramble a clearance, but his effort goes straight to Lee Devitt. His touch is good and finish is easy. 1-1!

  • 82'

Ludden makes it 2-1! A fine backheel by Barry and Ludden curls home for the lead.

  • 77'

Treaty going for it with their double change, but so far Athlone doing ok. Pierrot came close with a header only for Lee Devitt to clear off the line.

  • 68'

Enda Curran works the keeper, Velikin, with a stinging shot. Good effort from the home side.

  • 68'

The pressure is back on as Treaty go route one.

  • 67'

Athlone win a free-kick in the opposition half, a chance for them to relieve some pressure.

  • 66'

Treaty with a mad few minutes but unable to find the equaliser. Some scrambled defence from the visitors.

  • 61'

Alex Byrne against the bar! Crowded area and he hits the bar from about 16 yards. Cleared eventually for a corner.

  • 60'

    Campion-Hinds flashes a volley over.

  • 58'

Athlone Town Valerii Dolia fires a free-kick well over the bar. Poor effort.

  • 56'

Devitt with the cross and Curran heads at the keeper. Well gathered in the end.

  • 46'

Kick-off, for Athlone. Both sides are unchanged since half-time.

  • 45'

One minute to be added at the end of the opening half.

  • 42'

Treaty pressing that bit more, but yet to create a real goal-scoring chance.

  • 40'

Darren Nwankwo gets above everybody but the keeper gathers in a crowd of bodies. A dangerous corner from the hosts.

  • 35'

Pierrot close to the second as he heads Jamar Campion-Hinds fine cross narrowly wide. So close.

  • 28'

A nice through ball from Dolia is received by Pierrot who adds his 10th of the season with a cool, slow, low finish.

  • 26'

Patrick Hickey climbs highest but his header is wide. Himself and Ben O'Riordan require a moment after a heavy landing.

  • 24'

Alex Byrne sets Dean George free but his shot, off balance, is routine for Vladi Velikin in the Athlone goal.

  • 16'

Van Geenen goes into the book for a cynical foul on Dean George.

  • 12'

Conor Barry has an effort from distance but it is too easy for the visiting keeper.

  • 8'

Jamar Campion-Hinds has a corner well saved by Shane Hallahan, who pushes it clear.

  • 6'

Valeri Dolia fires over from inside the area. I will have to check on my car, as he may have hit it with that effort. Good work by Jamar Campion-Hinds in the build-up.

  • 4'

Noah Van Geenen is ok to continue.

  • 4'

Noah Van Geenen goes down with an injury.

  • 3'

Treaty with the better of the ball early on, but nothing by way off an attack yet.

  • 1'

Game on - Treaty start us off.

  • With Enda Minogue still side lined, Vladislav Velikin makes his second appearance for Athlone this season, they are unchanged from Monday's win in Donegal as they aim to keep their good form alive

  • Treaty make two changes from Monday's win in Bray, Dean George comes in for Success Edogun who fails to make the squad while Andy Spain replaces Darren Collins

  • Good evening from the Markets Field. Both Treaty United and Athlone Town are chasing three wins on the bounce for the first time this season. It has been a damp afternoon and evening in Limerick, but thankfully the rain has halted for now. This clash kicks off at 7.45pm
