Draw hands Treaty vital point
Kieran Hanlon’s 74th minute penalty gave Treaty United the all important point to rubber stamp their play-off spot, after a 1-1 draw with Athlone Town in Limerick.
This penalty cancelled out a 25th minute strike from the impressive James Doona. The result ends Athlone Town’s faint hopes of securing a play-off spot of their own.
Athlone had led this contest for nearly an hour an Paul Doolin will rue not getting a second goal, as his side were on top against a lacklustre Treaty outfit. But, backed by over 1,500 home fans Treaty got on top and secured their place in the top five, a spot which they’ve occupied for almost all of this season.
Home captain Jack Lynch was forced onto the home bench, having been delayed on-route to the game, owing to traffic congestion due to an earlier road traffic collision on the Limerick-Galway motorway. Tommy Barrett was able to recall Seán Guerins and Marc Ludden to the starting XI.
Michael Schlingermann was smart early on to deny ex-Athlone attacker Joel Coustrain.
James Doona opened the scoring on 25 minutes, after firing a couple of early efforts wayward. He was allowed to cut in onto his favoured right foot and sent a low-bullet to the net for a well taken goal.
Coustrain hobbled of prior to the interval as Treaty lacked the energy shown so often this season. Kurtis Byrne should have done better prior to half-time, sending a shot over the Treaty crossbar.
The game defining goal arrived on 74 minutes. Sub Armshaw forced a decent save from Schlingermann, but the ex-Sligo Rovers stopper was unable to gather the rebound and tripped the on-rushing Hanlon .
The Limerick native drilled home the spot-kick for his fifth goal of the campaign. Athlone finished this contest with little to trouble Ryan, a disappointing end to a season that promised a lot in the opening weeks.
Treaty now face a pair of away games to finish off the 27 league games, while Athlone entertain Cobh Ramblers on the final evening.
