Athlone cruise to victory on Shannonside
Athlone Town cruised to their first victory of the season with a 8-0 win over Treaty United in Markets Field this evening.
Madison Gibson was the hat-trick hero. Scarlett Heron, Chloe Singleton, Muireann Devaney, Eve Conheady and Antea Guvo also all added to an ideal evening for the visitors.
Athlone didn’t take long to get going. Just two minutes in, Kayleigh Shine played a long ball over the top through to Madison Gibson. The American got to the by-line and pulled it back for Scarlett Heron, who took her time and found the net.
The start got even better for Athlone in the 16th minute. Once again, Gibson was played through and got to the by-line. Once again, she pulled it back. This time, Chloe Singleton met it to double the midlanders lead.
Any doubt about the eventual outcome was cast aside on the half hour mark. Athlone won a free out right and sent the cross in. Ruth McDonnell was deemed to handle the ball as she went to clear it. The decision was perhaps a little harsh, but it made little difference. Gibson stepped up and found the top corner to add a goal to her two earlier assists.
Athlone were gifted their fourth in the 54th minute. Treaty played the ball back to Anne-Marie Ulliac, whose far too heavy touch saw her dispossessed by Madison Gibson who tapped it in for her brace.
Muireann Devaney got in on the action ten minutes later. Kayleigh Shine played another long ball over the top that the Leitrim native met. She kept her composure and sent it around Ulliac with ease.
Gibson had her hat-trick in the 72nd minute. Devaney had the ball on the edge of the area and laid it off to the American, who found the far corner. A top-drawer strike to seal a great individual performance.
Substitute Eve Conheady made her mark ten minutes from time. Singleton drove a low ball across the box that fell to Heron. Her initial effort was blocked before she laid it off to Conheady, who lobbed Ulliac.
The cake got its icing in injury time. Athlone saw another long range effort blocked and it fell to Gillian Keenan. She squared it across the goal and Antea Guvo snuck in to tap it in.
That will do wonders for the confidence of Hewitt’s side. For Treaty, things are looking very bleak already.

The cake has it's icing. It falls to Keenan in the box who squares it for Antea Guvo.
Goal! Seven heaven for Athlone. Chloe Singleton fires it across the box. It falls to Scarlett Heron who lays it off to Eve Conheady, who gets her first goal in senior football with a lob over Ulliac.
Goal! Devaney lays it off to Gibson on the edge of the area and she finds the far corner! Hat-trick for the American!
It's now Claire Winter's turn. She gets a shot off but Glackin is equal to it again. Good goalkeeping.
Lawlee drives forward for Treaty's first shot. Ciara Glackin is equal to it and palms it behind for a corner.
Goal! It's another for Athlone as Shine plays Devaney in over the top and she keeps her composure one on one and slots it in! Echoes of the 7-0 between these two last year.
Goal! Athlone have a 4th and it's a nightmare for Ulliac. The ball is played back to her and the touch is far too heavy. Gibson dispossesses her for a tap in and a brace.
Ciara Kilbey is played through for Treaty's first attack of the match. She's dispossessed and the second ball falls to Cara Griffin, whose eventual effort is well off target.

Goal! Gibson smashes it into the top corner from the spot! Brilliant penalty!
Penalty! Ruth McDonnell handles it from an Athlone free!
Goal! Athlone double their lead through similar circumstances! Gibson is again played through and pulls it back, this time for Singleton!
Athlone attack again and Heron tries her luck from range but it's right at Ulliac. The visitors on top by some margin in the early goings.
Athlone win a header from a corner but Cooper Lee Lane clears off the line.
Goal! Athlone have an early lead through Scarlett Heron! Gibson got on the end of a long ball, drove to the byline and pulled it back to Heron for the finish!

Treaty are looking to bounce back from a hammering at the hands of Shamrock Rovers last week. Athlone on the other hand had a bye last week but opened the season with a 3-1 loss against Peamount, so are also looking for a response.
Dana Scheriff is back on the Athlone bench after a very lengthy absence through injury.
