Match Report

Athlone Town upset Treaty United

Athlone dealt a blow to Treaty’s promotion hopes this evening, pulling off a shock 2-0 win against the Limerick outfit in Lissywollen tonight.

Thomas Oluwa put the hosts ahead a few minutes before the interval, whilst Adam Lennon got one on the hour mark to deliver Athlone’s third win all season.

Between the 10th and 20th minute both sides had chances to take the lead, but the bulk went to Athlone. The likes of Oluwa, Lennon and Gary Armstrong all had opportunities, but for one reason or another they went begging.

The best chance of the lot went to Treaty and it came from former Town player Success Edogun. He was played over the top and whilst bearing down on goal, Enda Minogue came out to deal with it. The young goalie covered his angles well and saved the eventual effort to keep it 0-0.

The game endured a near twenty minute lull but eventually a goal was scored in the 39th minute and it was a deserved lead for Athlone. A game of aerial pinball ensued in the Treaty half and as soon as one player took it to the ground, Oisin Duffy pressed high and won the ball.

He played through Oluwa who kept his composure and slotted by Jack Brady to make it 1-0. A minute later, Valeri Dolia slipped him through again on the left hand side of the box but from a tight angle, Brady saved. Half time came at a good time for Treaty.

Coming out of half time the visitors looked more dangerous. Willie Arsmhaw skinned Jarlath Jones on the wing in the 51st minute and his cross to the back post was met by Edogun, but he only found the side net.

Four minutes later it looked like a near penalty. Oisin Duffy committed a foul right on the edge of the area and the ref gave a free. Marc Ludden would send the resulting free into the wall.

Athlone got their second on the hour mark after Dolia played Oluwa down the left wing. Oluwa made the simple decision to square it to Lennon in the area and although Brady pulled off a great initial save, the rebound hit off Lennon and went in for the 2-0 lead.

Treaty pushed for the final half hour but couldn’t come close enough. They’ll head down back the Shannon disappointed with the performance and result. Athlone on the other hand, got win number three and should be fairly pleased.
