Match Report
Amazing Athlone trouble Treaty
Athlone Town continued their winning streak with a 4-1 win over Treaty United in Lissywollen tonight.
A brace from Emily Corbet via two penalties as well as long rangers from Jessica Hennessy and Muireann Devaney made up the Athlone goals.
Heidi O’Sullivan scored from the spot for the visitors, but it mattered little.
It took some time for the hosts to get into this one. In the early minutes Gillian Keenan and Corbet could have had goals following through balls, but both efforts were straight at Michaela Mitchell.
It was a speculative effort but captain Laurie Ryan came close in the 21st minute. She floated one at goal and smacked the post. Would have been a first of the season for her.
The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute. Hennessy picked up the ball in defence and played it out. Under no pressure, she sauntered goalwards and tried her luck, finding the net. A first of the season for the centre half.
The game became hectic for about ten minutes in the second half. Firstly, in the 52nd minute, Devaney put in a cross that was controlled in the area by Keenan. She was bundled into and the ref pointed to the spot, where Corbet sent Mitchell the wrong way.
About two minutes later Kelsey Munroe got a head injury when going low to head one out. She went down, but play continued, culminating in a Hennessy push in the back on Cara Griffin.
Three minutes passed between the penalty being given and taken due to Munroe being seen to, who was ok. Nonetheless, Heidi O’Sullivan stepped up and slotted it in to give Treaty life.
It only lasted so long because another two minutes passed until Corbet sent Devaney through who was fouled bearing down on goal. Corbet stepped up again and scored, despite Mitchell guessing the right way.
This one was signed, sealed and delivered in the 73rd minute when Devaney got Athlone’s fourth. Like Hennessy before her, she wasn’t pressed from range and tried her luck, managing to find the net despite a slight slip.
The win keeps the show rolling for Athlone. Due to Peamount’s draw with Wexford earlier, Tommy Hewitt’s side leapfrog Peas in the table and find themselves third, an astonishing feat for this side.
The next one up is a tough one though. They must travel to Ferrycarrig, where they’ll have a chance to leapfrog Wexford.
