Corbet nets five as Athlone hammer Treaty
Athlone Town kept the pressure on at the top of the table with a commanding 7-0 win over Treaty United in Markets Field this evening.
A Scarlett Heron brace as well as five from Emily Corbet more than did the job. As the score-line suggests, this one was never really close.
Athlone looked dangerous in the opening minute when Maddison Gibson headed a cross to the back post just over. It didn’t take too long for the breakthrough to come.
In the 14th minute, the Town pieced together a nice passing move. Heron played through Gillian Keenan on the left, who got to the ball just as it was rolling out and pulled it back. Heron was on the spot for the opener and from here on out, Athlone never looked back.
They scored twice in sixty second right before the half-hour mark to put this out of Treaty’s reach. Firstly, Melissa O’Kane played a brilliant through ball to Roisin Molloy who played a cross to Corbet to make it 2-0.
Barely a minute later, Muireann Devaney won the ball. She played it out to Gibson, who crossed from the left for Corbet to control and finish it to make it 3-0. Just like that, this was over.
The final goal of the first half came in the 36th minute after a brilliant passing move. The move was finished off when Heron played a through ball, Kennan dummied it, Molloy met it and squared it to Corbet for a first-half hat-trick. Athlone would continue their free-scoring form into the second half.
Five minutes into the second half, the visitors won a corner. Gibson went across to take it and her ball was met by Heron who secured a brace. This would cap off a fine performance from one of the younger players in this very young squad.
Not even sixty seconds later, it was six. Gibson pressed from the kickoff and won the ball on the right-hand side. She cut onto her favoured left foot, swinging it to the back stick. Once again, Corbet was on the spot to control and finish it. Amazingly, her contribution was not done yet.
Ten minutes from time, a poor kickout from Trish Fennelly Hunt set Treaty back. Corbet came deep to win the ball, drove at the area, and from just outside, buried it. The cake had its icing and Athlone headed back up the Shannon brimming with confidence.

Full time. Ref sees it fair to wrap this one early.
McInerney is through but McKiernan tips wide. Corner.
7-0! Corbet has five after she wins the ball deep and drives to the edge of the area and buries it!
Ryan (again) plays through Brennan, but Hunt saves (again). Corner.
Laurie Ryan plays Kayleigh Shine on over the top, but Hunt denies the eventual effort.
Hunt completely misses a pass back, but Alannah Mitchell covers her keeper to ensure it doesn't become seven.
This has been a lull for the past while. Outcome has been inevitable for quite some time.
A ball over the top for Devaney sees her through on goal, but Hunt is off her line to deny her.
Incredibly, it's six after Gibson presses high from the kickoff and cross to Corbet, who controls and finishes.
Goal! Athlone make it five after a Gibson corner is met by Heron!
Back underway.
Half time.
Goal! Corbet has a hattrick following a nice passage of play which once again ends in Molloy crossing it to her for a tap in. This is an onslaught.
Muireann Devaney is on the end of a long ball and goes through, but Trish Fennelly Hunt is off her line to deny Devaney.
Pinball in the Athlone box, but a Treaty player can't get a foot on it and Keenan clears.
Goal! In the blink of an eye it's three after a Gibson cross is controlled by Corbet who then places it in the top corner. This feels like a wrap.
Goal! Athlone are two up after Corbet scores from point blank range following a Molloy cross. Melissa O'Kane setup the move with a brilliant through ball for Molloy. This is going as expected.
Laoise Browne deals poorly with a long pass forward and Keenan latches onto the loose ball. She drives at goal, but slices the eventual shot with hear weak left foot.
Goal! Gillian Keenan prevents the ball from rolling out and fires it across to Scarlett Heron for a tap in!
Been mostly Athlone in the opening ten. Aside from Gibson's header in the first, they haven't had a real clear cut chance yet.
Gibson heads just over. Athlone look dangerous early.
We are off.
Athlone are looking to maintain pressure in the title race whilst Treaty United look condemned to the bottom of the table. The visitors are fully expecting to come away with three points.
