Match Report

Pats and Bohs play out a stalemate

A physical encounter between St. Patrick’s Athletic and Bohemians ends in a scoreless draw in front of a sold-out crowd at Richmond Park this evening.

This result means that neither side gain any ground on the other in the race for the Premier Division title.

With what was at stake in this game, it’s understandable that the game started with the air of tension that it did. Both sides knew that a win would put significant pressure on Shamrock Rovers at the league’s summit.

Saints’ attacker Jason McClelland came closest to scoring in the opening twenty minutes of the game when his rasping effort from outside the box looked destined for the bottom corner, but James Talbot dived across to palm it clear.

St. Pat’s would have a better chance to score eight minutes later when Kacper Radkowski allowed a long ball to bounce over him, leaving an opportunity for Conor Carty to run clear on goal but the young striker rushed his shot and his lofted effort flew well over bar.

Apart from the two attempts on Talbot’s goal, Bohemians were relatively comfortable throughout the first half but didn’t create a real chance of note until the closing stages of the opening forty-five minutes.

Danny Grant took the first shot on Dean Lynness’s goal in the forty-first minute, with the Bohemians winger being kept relatively quiet on his first start back for his old club.

Bohemians started the second half the stronger of the two sides but the only effort that fashioned a save out of Lyness was a dipping effort by Jordan Flores, which may have caused the keeper some issues but the Athletic keeper saved comfortably.

The Saints would come the width of the post away from scoring – not once but twice in the second half. Tommy Lonergan’s dinked effort came down off the post into the path of Carty, but the Saints striker’s effort also was denied by the upright.

Bohemians would also be foiled by the woodwork late in the game as James Akintunde’s header from six yards crashed off the bar in the away side's best chance of the game.

The game finished level after a frantic finish to the game in what was probably a fair result for both sides, but neither will be happy with a point considering that a real title charge is on the cards for both Dublin sides.
