Match Report
Dundalk and Bohemians will battle it out for third place this evening as the second phase of games begins to show the real contenders for this season's title. The Lilywhites will be aiming to move level on points with third-placed Bohemians in the table when the sides meet at Oriel Park tonight. After beating Cork City in the most dramatic fashion last week, Dundalk was given a little bit of a reality check last Monday as the six-game unbeaten run they were on came to a halt against Derry City at the Ryan McBride Brandywell with a 3-0 loss. Bohs were beaten on both of their trips to Oriel Park last season and their last victory at the Carrick Road venue came during the Covid-ravaged season. That victory in the 2021 season saw former Dundalk striker Georgie Kelly come back to haunt his former club and score the only goal of the game from the penalty spot. Declan Devine’s side are also looking to get back to winning ways after back-to-back losses to Shamrock Rovers and Derry City. Stephen O’Donnell was in good form speaking to the media this week despite the loss and said “I think it was a fifty-fifty game in Derry on Monday. Both teams didn’t look overly threatening and the main difference was we gifted them goals, they didn’t.” “I thought we could have been better on a physicality front. We watched the game back on Wednesday amongst each other so we know where we can improve and where we need to improve.” “Bohs have had a really good start to the season and they’re very competitive, physical, very direct, and play to their strengths. They have good players but it’s a game to look forward to. In team news, Darragh Leahy, who went off injured against Derry City on Monday night, and Rayhaan Tulloch, who missed the game at the Brandywell, will both be assessed before tonight's match. Andy Boyle, Louie Annesley, Robbie Benson, Greg Sloggett and John Mountney are all still missing.LOI PD Preview: Dundalk v Bohemians
Despite that loss, the Lilywhites sit fourth and are three points behind the Gypsies and one point ahead of fifth-placed Shelbourne. They say it’s tough at the top…
The last meeting between the two sides came at Dalymount Park in February when goals from another ex-Dundalk player, Jordan Flores, and Declan McDaid put the hosts ahead before Johannes Yli-Kokko pulled one back late on with an excellent long-range strike.

Carrickmacross Road, Dundalk No. 3 Urban, The Municipal District of Dundalk, County Louth, Leinster, A91 RC44, Ireland |
FULL TIME: Bohemians came from two goals down to claim a vital point against Dundalk in a game that pretty much had everything you would ask for in Oriel Park. An early strike from Patrick Hoban and the goal of the night from Connor Malley by virtue of James Talbots back was cancelled out by a second half replacements Declan McDaids’ brace. Bohs and Dundalk will leave the contest knowing they have to settle for a point but Dundalk will be furious they let the game slip in a absolutely nothing given contest.
ADDED TIME: Five minutes
GOAL: Ali Coote's inswinging free finds its way to the net past Shepperd. There may have been a touch on the way from McDaid but hard to tell in a crowded area.
PING PONG IN THE BOX: Dundalk are on the lines here, the ball is bouncing everywhere but Dundalk cannot clear.
CHANCE: Ward, Hoban and McCourt all have sights on goal but none of them could convert! Dundalk and Bohs still pressing here
KNIFE EDGE: This is about game management now - Dundalk will have to defend with thier lives as Bohemians push for an equaliser.
GOAL: Bohs pull one back with a powerful header from Declan McDaid. Game on here!
SUB: Paul Doyle and Keith Ward on for Lewis and Martin for Dundalk
YELLOW: Robbie McCourt is given a yellow for time wasting.
SAVE: Nathan Sheppard pulls off a great save and moments later Robbie McCourt clears off the line. Dundalk defending well at the moment.
SUB: Daniel Kelly replaces Johanne Yli-Kokko for Dundalk's first change of the game.
YELLOW: Keith Buckley is given a yellow for a foul on O'Kane.
ATTEMPT: Flores free kick is cleared away by Malley - the ball cannot be recycled and its cleared by the Dundalk defense.
CHANCE: Robbie McCourt's deliver was met by Martin but he couldn't direct it goalwards and it goes over.
YELLOW: Pat Hoban gets a yellow, he is annoyed by a comment by made by McDonnell as he was down injured.
SHOT: Adam McDonnell tees up a shot but its tame enough and its well caught but Sheppard.
SUB: Double change at the break for Bohs as Declan McDaid and Jay Benn come in for McManus and Clarke
RESTART: We are back underway at Oriel Park.
HALF TIME: A Pat Hoban header and a Connor Malley thunder strike give Dundalk a 2-0 lead here at Oriel Park, this has been biting at every turn. It's a great game of football.
ADDED TIME: One added minute here at Oriel Park.
CHANCE: O'Kane cuts inside and strikes again which takes another deflection, Hoban's thundering header is cleared off the line and Williams follow up is blocked!
PENO CALL: Yil-Kokko goes down in the area and the Dundalk bench are calling for it but the referee is not interested in the protests.
SHOT: Malley skips past his marker and hits a low effort that flies past the post.
GOAL: WHAT A STRIKE SON! Connor Malley picks the ball up and unleashes what can only be described as the hit of the season, it cannons off the crossbar and strikes Talbot on the back and in 2-0 to Dundalk.
NEEDLE: This game is tense to the nth degree, there is very little being given away and tackles are flying in. This is a proper battle at Oriel.
CHANCE: Ryan O'Kane cuts into his right and hits a low effort that takes a deflection for a corner, the resulting spot kick sees a foul in the area and its a free kick.
YELLOW: Jordan Flores is given a yellow card for a foul on John Martin.
FLORES: Jordan Flores strikes from distance at a free kick but it cannons off the wall, thats been the best chance for the away side so far.
CHANCE: Martin breaks down the right but his cross with O'Kane as his target but it was over hit.
GOAL: What a start for Dundalk! Yli-Kokko forces Bohs into a corner, it is sent to the back post and Hoban peels away from his mark to nod it across the face of goal and into the far corner.
KICK OFF: We are underway at Oriel Park - Yli-Kokko kicks off proceedings.
TEAM ARRIVALS: The return of Darude and Sandstorm to Oriel.... But here were go ! Dundalk take on Bohemians and Bohs are wearing the Dublin Bus jerseys ...no that isn't a typo !!!
KILLER THE KING OF ALKMAAR: Former Dundalk player Ciaran Kilduff on co-comms duties tonight on LOITV. His last goal came for Dundalk came against Bohs at Dalymount Park when he popped up with an 89th minute winner to earn Stephen Kenny’s side a 1-0 win on July 5th 2017. He left to join Jacksonville Armada but just before he did that - he was inches away from putting Dundalk in a dream tie against Celtic as his effort against Rosenborg was brilliantly saved by André Hansen in extra time. Had he scored it would have been 2-2 and Dundalk would have went through on away goals to face the Scottish giants.
O'KANE: Ryan O'Kane starts his 20th game for Dundalk tonight. His first start under Stephen O’Donnell came in Dundalk’s visit to Dalymount Park when the Lilywhites beat Bohs 1-0 on August 12th last.
HOBAN: Pat Hoban is back in the Dundalk starting XI tonight. He has scored 15 goals in 22 appearances against Bohs, including a career best 4 in a 6-1 win over the Gypsies in the EA Sports Cup in August 2019. His first career hat-trick also came in a 3-0 win over Bohs here in July 2013
MALLEY: Connor Malley starts the 40th game of his career this evening. He is the only outfield player to have started all 17 league games for Dundalk so far this season.
SHEPS: Nathan Shepperd starts his 50th league game for Dundalk this evening. He has 5 clean sheets from his opening 16 matches – the same return as this time last year.
HEAD TO HEAD: Due to three goals scored in the final seconds of their last two games at Oriel Park, the Dundalk supporters have grown accustomed to late goals during home games. When Bohemians last suffered a home defeat, they recovered with a victory over Louth opponents, defeating Drogheda United 2-0 after falling to St. Patrick's Athletic in Dalymount by a score of 3-2.
HEAD TO HEAD: If the previous match between the two sides is any indication, Dundalk and Bohemians will be a fierce contest. There was 11 yellow cards issued during Bohemians' 2-1 victory over Dundalk in February (six for Bohemians and five for Dundalk).
MIND THE GAP: Although Bohemians have a game in hand over the Lilywhites in fourth place, they will be keen to avoid falling below Shamrock Rovers and Derry City, both of whom have been outstanding lately. For Bohs, recent weeks have either been a feast or a famine in terms of scoring, as they have gone two games without a goal after beating Cork City by five goals prior to their recent losing streak.
BACK HOME The Lilywhites are back in Oriel Park, where in their last game the game ended in madness as there was two red cards for Cork City and two late injury-time goals for Dundalk to claim all three points against a struggling Rebels side.
BACKGROUND: Dundalk are back home after a dismal away day against Derry City at the Brandywell on Monday night, comprehensively beaten 3-0 by the Candystripes. While Declan Devine will be hoping his side can put an end to their recent dip in form this Friday in Dundalk, after losing two in a row against Shamrock Rovers and Derry City.
Good Evening from Oriel Park, Ciaran Callan is here to take you through the 'Battle for Third' as Dundalk take on Bohemians at the 'Home of Football'
