Match Report

Dundalk close on leaders Shamrock Rovers with win against Bohs

Tadgh Ryan's unfortunate own goal gave Dundalk the three points in a close game against Bohemians at Dalymount Park, giving the Lilywhites a very crucial away victory in their first of four road trips.

Despite being reduced to 10 men in the second half when Andy Boyle was dismissed, Stephen O'Donnell's team fought hard and held onto their advantage to secure the victory and tighten the gap on Shamrock Rovers at the top.

The opening chance fell to the home side as following a corner, Ciaran Kelly and Andy Boyle fought for the ball, and Kelly had the first shot on goal, but it was well wide of the target.  Tadgh Ryan spilt Darragh Leahy's cross, and John Martin, an early substitution for the Lilywhites, followed it in, but the goalie got it at the last second to clear it. Dundalk continued to press as  Sam Bone continued Dundalk's forward push as he delivered the ball long into the Bohemians area. After some clever footwork from O'Kane, Martin unleashed his effort, but Tadgh Ryan made a superb stop with his feet.

Just before halftime, Dundalk's perseverance paid off as they scored under the most bizarre circumstances. Tadgh Ryan and John Martin both competed for the deep cross from Darragh Leahy that was fired into the box. Ryan dropped the ball under pressure and bundled it into the goal.

Early in the second half, Joe Adams collected the second ball and curled a superb effort from the edge of the box that narrowly missed the Bohemian's goal as Dundalk continued to press for a second. The next to try was Ryan O'Kane, who after latching onto a deft pass from Joe Adams, struck a low effort that was well stopped at the near post.

As Varian came through on goal and Boyle bodychecked him, the referee had no choice but to give the Dundalk captain a straight red, turning the game on its head.

Bohemians started to put the Dundalk defence to the test, and Afolabi, who had entered the game in the second half, had a wonderful opportunity when he met a cross sent in the area but failed to get the crucial touch. John Martin launched a rare second-half attack, but his looping header from Steven Bradley's free-kick missed the goal. Afolabi, however, was given the opportunity to score late in the game when his curling shot beat Sheppard but clipped the upright.

Games like these are decided by small decisions - the post denied Bohemians -  pressure gifted Dundalk.

We are underway at Dalymount - Bohemians kick us off.

  • There are seven home debuts for Bohemians tonight in what is a much-changed side for the Dalymount club.

  • Bohs have won just four of their 11 home games to date – also seventh best in the division with just sixteen points out of a possible thirty-three.

  • Dundalk has won just twice on the road this season with just 13 points from 12 matches to date – the 7th best in the division. Dundalk is also the only side yet to hit double figures for goals scored on the road this season.

  • A year ago today both Dundalk and Bohs were bowing out of Europe. The Gypsies lost 2-0 away to PAOK in Greece to end their hopes of a Europa Conference League play-off with Keith Ward missing a big chance near the end. Dundalk also missed out on a potential play-off with Anderlecht after losing 2-1 to Vitesse at Tallaght Stadium with Patrick Hoban’s penalty setting up a frantic finish on a night when Dundalk had a perfectly good goal by Michael Duffy chalked off in the opening stages.

  • Of the last 10 games with Bohs, Dundalk has won just three - the FAI Cup 1/4 final in Dalymount in November 2020, the 2-1 win at Oriel Park last September and the 3-1 win in May when Hoban, Benson and Doyle scored second-half goals to cancel out Ciaran Kelly’s 15th-minute opener

  • TEAM NEWS: Alfie Lewis and Ryan O'Kane both start for Dundalk at Dalymount. It's Alfie's first start since playing 97 minutes of last November's FAI Cup final win against Bohemians. It's just O'Kane's 2nd start for Dundalk and his first in 497 days since the defeat to Shamrock Rovers in April 2021.
