Match Report

Dundalk secure European Football beating Bohs at Caseys Field

Dundalk FC secured European football for 2023 with an excellent 2-1 win over Bohemians in Caseys’ Field. While Dundalk quietly dealt with the task and business at hand it was a favour from Sligo Rovers who beat St. Patricks Athletic in the Showgrounds that ensured they go into the last game of the season with third place in the league secured.

For a club in transition and a team marshalled by Stephen O’Donnell in his first year, it's an incredible story from the difficulties of the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Hope has finally sprung eternal for the Lilywhites.

Bohemians started the stronger with Liam Burt breaking down the left and cutting in on his stronger right foot to get a sight on goal, his curling effort was well saved by Sheppard and Andy Boyle cleared the secondary ball for a corner. Bohemians continued to press as Dundalk failed to clear a corner with Kris Twardek striking the side netting that sent a moment of real nerves around the ground.

Those nerves were to evaporate in an instant as David McMillan struck a sublime free kick that curled past Reece Byrne to open the scoring. Runar Hauge whose brother was in Tallaght last night was to add a second for Dundalk as he broke free of the Bohemians' defence with one touch that just took him away from his marker. He was then to find himself one on one with Byrne. He slotted the ball calmly under the keeper to put Dundalk two ahead with two minutes left before halftime.

Dundalk continued to press with Runar Hauge bearing down the right and hitting a fantastic strike that just flew over the bar due to Byrne tipping it over. Liam Burt tried to get a goal back for the away side with a spectacular volley as the ball fell to him suddenly but Sheppard was equal to it.

There was a collective cheer from both stands at Casey’s as word filtered through that Aidan Kenna’s penalty had given Sligo the lead in the Showgrounds. This didn’t stop Bohemians from having the final say and goal at the home of Dundalk for this season. They were to pull one back with a goal from Ethon Varian that left the Lilywhites with a few nervy moments near the end.

The crowd trundled in droves onto the pitch to meet their heroes at full time as the sense was the job was done.

Bohemians walked off the pitch despondent that their efforts were all in vain.

The word was to filter through that the full-time whistle had blown in Sligo and Dundalk had secured their place in the Europa Conference League as a seeded side.

Unveiling a banner from the Shed side the Dundalk players held it aloft of a drawing of a set of hands holding the name Dundalk FC on UEFA branded paper akin to that you see at the Qualifying draws.

Stephen O'Donnell's next blue print for Dundalk is set to be drawn.

The last weekend of October has traditionally been a memorable one for Runar Hauge. Five years ago tomorrow, Hauge made his debut for hometown club Bodo/Glimt as a 16-year-old when he replaced his brother Jens Petter for the final 24 minutes of a 6-0 win over Asane. Tonight he could be putting his on-loan club into Europe.

  • 39'

GOAL: NOW THEN, NOW THEN! This was a goal fit to win any game. Runar Hauge whose brother was in Tallaght last night broke free of the Bohemians' defence with one touch that just took him away from his marker to make it one on one with Byrne. He slotted it calmly under the keeper to put Dundalk two ahead with give minutes to go before halftime.

  • 17'

An announcement has just been made that an assistant referee is receiving abuse and if it continues the continuation of the game is in jeopardy.

  • 16'

Ciaran Kelly is booked for Bohemians.

  • 15'

11 months ago today O'Donnell's St Pat's beat Bohs on penalties in the FAI Cup final. Ciaran Kelly and Liam Burt are the only two survivors from that day's starting XI with two of Pat's side in Dundalk's: Alfie Lewis and Sam Bone.

  • 13'

CHANCE: Bohemians nearly have the ball in the net as a corner failed to be cleared and Kris Twardek struck the side netting that sent a moment of nerves around the ground.

  • 11'

CHANCE: Bradley feeds the ball to Ryan O'Kane and his cross was just behind McMillan who was awaiting to pounce.

  • 8'

David McMillan and Adriano Reale had a few words after McMillan was challenged, it seems the Dundalk striker was no happy.

  • 3'

SAVE: Liam Burt breaks down the left and cuts on his left, his curling effort is well saved by Sheppard and Boyle clears the secondary ball for a corner which is cleared at the second attempt by the Dundalk defence.

  • 1'

Well we are only 50 seconds into this and the task that Dundalk has been set is well and truly on, they have charged down on this Bohemians defence and are looking to get a goal in early.

  • ‘All or Nothing’ is the banner produced by Dundalk fans - fitting enough for an LOI game which is all about European qualification. The difference between 3rd and 4th in this league is €250k

  • And here comes the teams. A band of red fury of flares greets the sides as they emerge from the tunnel. This is a red letter night for the men from Caseys' Field. A banner in the Shed is unfurled - All or Nothing.

  • Fresh from signing his new 2-year deal on Monday, Ryan O'Kane makes his 30th appearance in Dundalk colours against the club whom he impressed so much against in a pre-season friendly under Filippo Giovagnoli at the start of last season.

  • For Bohemians: Former Dundalk player Jordan Flores captains Bohs who have 17-year-old Reece Byrne making his debut in goal with Tadhg Ryan on the bench.

  • Bohemians’ last win over Dundalk was in May 2021 when they were 5-1 winners at Dalymount Park. Georgie Kelly scored a hat-trick on the night with Tyreke Wilson and Promise Omochere also on target, with Greg Sloggett scoring a late consolation for the visitors. That was as they sake a troubled time for the club which was in a middle of an identity crisis.

  • Tonight is O’Donnell’s 5th time going head-to-head with new Bohs boss Declan Devine. He has won two, drawn one and lost one of the previous four meetings.

  • Tonight is Stephen O’Donnell’s 12th time managing against Bohemians. He has won five, drawn three and lost three of the previous eleven games but is undefeated against them as Dundalk boss having won the last meeting 1-0 in Dalymount Park in August and the last meeting in Oriel Park 3-1 in May.

  • Stephen O'Donnell has opted to make one change from the side which drew with Sligo Rovers last week with Steven Bradley coming in for Joe Adams, who drops to the bench. While there had been hopes that Pat Hoban would make it back tonight, he is not involved but was doing work earlier.

  • Good Evening from Caseys Field for the Final time this year - pardon the pun but the final whistle is about to blow on this season at the home of Dundalk FC as they take on Bohemians. Ciaran Callan is here to take you through the action as European Football is still on the cards for the Lilywhites.
