Match Report

Bohs Slip Up In European Race

A scoreless draw between Drogheda United and Bohemians at Weaver’s Park puts a serious dent in the Gypsies’ hopes of finishing in one of the league’s automatic European places.

The result means that the Boynesiders prevented a clean sweep against the north Dublin side, with Bohemians winning the three previous meetings in the league this season.

The draw drops Bohs down to fifth, a point behind their opponents this Monday night at Dalymount Park – Damien Duff’s Shelbourne.

The first half was extremely cagey, but there were some big opportunities for both sides, especially for the away side.

Dylan Connolly and Jordan Flores had early chances to find Jonathan Afolabi in the Drogheda United penalty area, and although Flores managed this before the quarter-hour mark, Afolabi knew little about his shot towards Andrew Wogan as the ball seemed to bounce off him into the keeper’s gloves.

James Clarke and Ali Coote both had efforts on goal but were saved comfortably by Wogan in the Drogheda goal while James Talbot was kept relatively quiet in the opening 45 minutes but had to deal with a long-range shot from Matthew O’Brien midway through the half.

Drogheda thought they had taken the lead in the 27th minute when Darragh Markey slalomed between several white shirts before finding Adam Foley who had ghosted into the box unopposed.

Although Foley converted the chance, the goal was ruled out for offside and the sides remained level.

Afolabi had another guilt-edged opportunity to put his side ahead after some fantastic dribbling by Connolly resulting in the ball being squared for the 23-year-old, but the effort never left the Wogan's frame resulting in a simple save.

The second half began with Bohemians dominating the ball but doing very little with it as Drogheda gradually grew into the game as neither side were able to create a chance of note for the majority of the second 45 minutes.

The best chance of the second half for Bohemians fell to Afolabi yet again, but it was beginning to feel like ‘one of those nights’ for the young striker as his attempt from an Ali Coote pullback ended up being straight at Wogan.

Afolabi was given a final chance to snatch a win for the away side but his header towards the opposition goal flew wide, keeping the score level.

A tense second half, which provided few chances for either side, ended in disappointment for Bohemians but joy for Drogheda as they took their first points off the Gypsies this season.
