Match Report

Kirk Puts Bohs Five Clear At The Summit

Goals from Paddy Kirk and Declan McDaid saw leaders Bohemians come away from Wearers Park with a hard fought win over a battling Drogheda Utd.

Kirk scored in the 17th minute with McDaid sealing the win in stoppage time. Drogs will wonder how they didn’t get something out of the game. They dominated the second half but couldn’t find a way past James Talbot in the Bohs goals.

In the 14th minute Dylan Grimes did well and found Freddie Draper but his effort was saved by Talbot.

Bohs broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Former Drogs player James Clarke brought a fine save out of keeper Colin McCabe, the loose ball fell to full-back Paddy Kirk, he took a few steps inside before hitting an excellent strike to the net.

The visitors enjoyed possession after that but didn’t force McCabe into making too many saves of note. Drogs had half chances but nothing to trouble Talbot.

Drogs started the second half brightly. Darragh Markey hit a low shot that the Bohs netminder Talbot saved and in the 52nd minute Talbot had to be alert to save Draper’s powerful snapshot. Down the other end, within seconds, Jonathan Afolabi hit a shot that just went inches wide of the far post with McCabe beaten.

The home side continued to press and pile on the pressure but couldn’t beat Talbot; due in some ways to poor finishing and decision making. The Bohs keeper also did well when called into action. Bohs were disappointing in the second half and seemed content to sit back on their 1-0 lead.

As the clock ticked down Drogs pushed on for an equaliser. In the 89th minute Draper’s ball found the head of sub Michael Leddy but his effort lacked power and it was easy for Talbot to gather. Minutes later Keeley got up but headed wide. Drogs were caught right at the end as Bohs broke and a mistake from McCabe allowed McDaid in to grab a second goal for Bohs; it was a nice finish from a tight angle.
