Stunning Flores free-kick helps Bohs down Drogs

Bohemians picked up their third win of the season after a second-half strike from James Akintunde secured a 3-1 win over Drogheda United at Dalymount Park this evening.

Jordan Flores opened the scoring with a wonderful free-kick but it would be cancelled out by Freddie Draper minutes later, Ali Coote put them ahead just before the interval, but it was Akintunde’s strike at the start of the second half that gave them that cushion.

An ideal response for Declan Devine’s men as they picked up a win to keep them fighting at the top after their 1-0 defeat on Friday night, Drogheda looked impressive but just had little chances to break through the Bohs backline.

It was the home side who looked to be on the front foot early on, a succession of corners kept pressure on the Drogheda defence, and shouts of an early penalty were turned down by the referee as Bohs appealed for a handball.

Corner after corner as Drogheda's defence was tested, James Akintunde was hacked down as Bohemians mounted an attack, up stepped Jordan Flores and we know just how dangerous he can be on that left leg, he curled a beautiful effort over the bar and into the back of the net, top bins you could not ask for a better strike off a free kick.

Despite going ahead after ten minutes, the lead did not last long, Drogheda with their first major attack caused hassle, Dayle Rooney delivered a precise pass into the area, James Talbot showed a little bit of hesitation to come out and gather but Freddie Draper showed his strikers instinct as he got in to get a touch and equalise.

The hosts had plenty of early chances after conceding, James Akintunde looked dangerous he played in Jonathan Afolabi found space in the area but leaned a little far back and Ryanair passengers in Dublin Airport will be on the runway a little longer this evening.

Afolabi had another chance minutes later but again he blazed over and an offside spared him hitting a third strike just over the crossbar, he took a little too long just after the half-hour mark to work a shot on goal, while Talbot was needed at the other end as Draper almost had the Bohs net minder blushing once again.

But it was the home side who would strike first, this time it was a dangerous cross into the area Emmanuel Adegboyega attempted to head clear but it hit the side of his head, the ball fell to Ali Coote on the edge of the area and his right foot shot rifled into the net as it looked to have taken a little deflection.

It was a cagey start to the second half but six minutes in and The Gypsies were two goals ahead, it was a thing of beauty watching their link up play, quick passes before Declan McDaid got down the left wing and crossed to Coote, Coote used the space well and setup James Akintunde, his shot was blocked but it somehow found its way into the net.

Coote almost set up Afolabi for their fourth seven minutes later, but his effort was defended well by Conor Keeley, it looked like the forward had put the first half behind him but Keeley prevented what looked like a great chance for a fourth.

Another shout for a penalty was turned down by referee Ray Matthews, Akintunde’s shot looked to have struck the arm of Keeley, he did well minutes earlier to stop Afolabi but this time he looked to have defended well but in more of illegal circumstances.

Against the run of play Drogheda had a great chance after the hour mark to add a second, but a great 1v1 save from Talbot denied Draper a second, Flores was stripped of possession by Adam Foley, he played it to Draper but Talbot showed his experience to save well.

Drogheda had a great chance as we ticked into the final ten minutes, plenty of blocks by Bohs defenders as they threw everything in the way including a hand as Drogheda appealed, Talbot made a big save in the middle of it all, a couple of words exchanged between the two and some handbags followed but Bohemians remained 3-1 ahead.

But of the 4112 in attendance, it was the Bohemians faithful that would leave the happier of the two, another late call for a penalty by Drogheda was chalked off as Draper looked to have had a swipe taking out of him but again Matthews said no as Bohs sing for the misery of Shamrock Rovers and their side getting a big win.
