Match Report

Cork hold Rovers in Turner’s Stalemate

Cork City and Shamrock Rovers played out to a goalless draw in Turner’s Cross this evening, with little at stake for either side at this point in the season.

It proved to be a somewhat lethargic match for most of the 90 as Rovers fielded a near-completely changed starting XI from their clash against Pats on Friday.

Simon Power, who made just his third appearance of the season this evening, proved to be Rovers’ most potent threat, squandering the best opportunity of the game as he fired over the bar from point-blank range at the beginning of the second half.

Ruairi Keating was left with little service to feed off in front of goal as the game dwindled down to a 0-0 draw.

It was a clash of opposing faiths in Turner’s Cross, Shamrock Rovers beginning their title victory lap, while Cork had already been condemned to the play-offs to fight for league survival, the dead rubber nature of the match resulting in a largely lethargic tempo.

Stephen Bradley lent opportunities to many of the forgotten figures of the Rovers’ squad as well as their expecting young prospects, Lee Grace the only figure in the starting XI that had played against St. Patrick’s Athletic on Friday.

Simon Power-who made just his third appearance of the season-proved to be the bright spark in The Hoops attack, impressing with his link-up play, his final product however always leaving a bit wanting.

Cork struggled to create many opportunities despite the weakened Rovers line-up, Ruairí Keating left with little service to feed on and in general, looking quite idle in the final third, Malik Dijksteel playing with direct aggression but lacking the quality to find the cutting-edge pass.

The pitch at Turner’s Cross limited both sides when it came to their quality of play, beginning to cut up earlier on and descending in to a mud bath during the final minutes.

As the second half got underway the game looked to widen in scope, Cork certainly enjoying a stronger impetus going forward, sending a lot of deep crosses into the Rovers box in particular.

Cian Baragry was presented with a great opportunity to put The Rebel Army ahead as he looked free to attack a free header from close range, Kieran Cruise getting in at the last minute to send the ball out for a corner.

Power again proved to be the focal point of The Hoops’ attack, squandering the best chance of the game as he fired over the bar from point-blank range at the beginning of the second half.

Cork began to pile on the pressure late on, an injury time goal line scramble should’ve seen Gareth Walker put Cork ahead from close range, miscommunication seeing captain Cian Coleman take the ball from Walker’s feet before toiling with the ball.

A minute later Barry Coffey found himself free at the back post, towering above to produce a powerful header, drawing a wonderful save from Leon Pohls who parried the ball away instinctively to keep the score level.

Shamrock Rovers were denied a guard of honour at Turner’s Cross this evening-defying conventional practice over the last few years-and will get the opportunity to celebrate their fourth league title in a row against Sligo on Friday.

Cork travel to Dalymount Park to finish off a torrid League of Ireland season, before facing either Waterford FC or Cobh Ramblers in their fight for league survival in the promotion/relegation playoffs.

  • Full-time. Cork City 0-0 Shamrock Rovers.

  • 90'

Two big chances for Cork to win the game! A scramble from a corner sees Walker step up to bury the ball home from point blank range, a lack of communication seeing Coleman nick the ball! Minutes later Rovers falling under pressure as Coffey gets a header in at the back post, Pohls producing an excellent save to keep the score level!

  • 86'

    Hoare comes off for Kavanagh.

  • 83'

Keating booked after a physical altercation with Hoare.

  • 78'

Two more subs for Cork, Owolabi and Bailey coming on to replace Worman and O'Donovan.

  • 71'

Richie Holland brings on two subs for Cork, taking Honohan and Dijksteel off in exchange for Drinan and Murphy.

  • 65'

Gaffney and Burke come on in place of Greene and Burt.

  • 60'

Power finds the ball on the counter and darts through the middle of the pitch finding himself in a 2 v 2 situation, his pass to Greene lacking the necessary pace as Dijkstell recovers and clears the ball.

  • 56'

Cork enjoying a lot more of the ball, finding a lot of joy with some deep crosses into the Rovers box. This time Bargary is presented with a good chance to attack at the back post, Cruise doing well to deflect the ball out for another corner.

  • 51'

A big chance for Keating as he towers over Cruise to get on the end of a cross, unable to get the necessary contact to guide the ball goalwards.

  • 48'

Play restarts at Turner's Cross. A bright start for Rovers sees Burt swing a free-kick into the box, finding the figure of Sean Hoare who heads to Simon Power at the back post, Power squandering a golden opportunity for Rovers to pull ahead as he fires over.

  • Half-time: Cork City 0-0 Shamrock Rovers.

  • 44'

One minute of added time to be played in Turner's Cross.

  • 38'

A long ball from Cruise falls to Power up front, who takes the ball down tidily but can only muster up a weak shot that fails to challenge Brooks.

  • 33'

The game's fallen into an extremely lethargic lull as neither side have been able to fashion any big chances, the lack of stakes undoubtedly playing a factor.

  • 27'

Cork have struggled to create much so far, as a through ball to Keating is deftly intercepted by Hoare.

  • 21'

The pitch looks to be taking a hammering in Turners' Cross, visibly cutting up in the opening period.

  • 15'

A nice bit of link up between Nugent, Greene and Power sees the ball drop to Power on the edge of the box, the forward unable to find the target as his shot blazes over the bar.

  • 10'

Power lines up a free-kick from 20 yards out, bending the ball around the Cork wall and drawing an instinctive save from Brooks. It's been a bright start from Power, who makes just his third appearance of the season this evening.

  • 5'

Cruise picks up the ball and tries to swing the ball into the Cork box from the left. The ball flies over the bar, the pitch potentially at blame as the ground at Turner's Cross looks a bit worse for wear...

  • 1'

Cork get the action underway in Turner's Cross!

  • Evening all and welcome to tonight's match coverage of Cork City FC vs Shamrock Rovers. The Hoops begin their title victory lap this evening as they face a Cork side already condemned to the play-offs, where they'll fight for league survival against Waterford/Cobh Ramblers. The dead rubber nature of the match is reflected in Stephen Bradley's starting XI, Lee Grace the only player in the line-up to have started against St. Patricks Athletic on Friday.
