Match Report

Rovers Move Within A Point Of The Summit

Shamrock Rovers saw off a prickly Cork City side 5-0 in Tallaght Stadium, to remain third and close the gap to Peamount United to a single point.

Cork were arguably the better side in the opening half, stifling Rovers’ attacking firepower with supreme competence.

The Rebel Army were unable to maintain their intense tempo for long however, Jaime Thompson netting from a free-kick 25 yards out at the turn of the half. Lia O’Leary doubled her side’s advantage in the 65th minute, finishing off a brilliant run with a tidy finish across Hannah Walsh’s goal.

Rovers wrapped up the tie late on as Jessicia Hennessy headed home their third after 81 minutes, before Abbie Larkin got in to make it four, as Lauren Kelly headed home the fifth in added time

A quiet first 25 minutes saw Cork prove uncompromising in their choice to shove away any potential pragmatism and instead attack and press with intensity, Lauren Walsh and Eva Mangan receiving chances early on that drew saves from Amanda Budden.

Rovers were slow to get out of the blocks and looked incredibly nervy playing out from the back,  their back three of Shauna Fox, Jessica Hennesy and Gargan struggling to build out of a swamp of Cork players.

For one unfamiliar with the league standings they would’ve been surprised with the fact Rovers stood fourteen points above Cork before kick-off, The Rebel Army arguably the better side in the first half.

Laura Shine nearly put the visitors ahead when she dropped the shoulder past Fox in the Rover’s box and unleashed a vicious trike that drew an instinctive save from Budden-stopping it with her feet and deflecting the ball out for a corner.

The Hoops were uncharacteristically quiet in their attacking endeavours, Larkin and Thompson silenced by Cork’s astute defending. Half chances fell to Savannah McCarthy and Áine O’Gorman, neither player really able to challenge Hannah Walsh in Cork’s net.

O’Neill was left with the difficult task of trying to reinvigorate a blunt attack at half-time, but was rewarded instantly when in the 47th minute Thompson drilled a low, powerful freekick from 25 yards out that veered past Cork’s wall and found the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.

The goal visibly lifted a weight off the Rovers’ players shoulders-immediately playing with a new-found sense of freedom and creativity.

Lia O’Leary doubled her side’s advantage in the 65th minute, picking up the ball on the byline and breaking down the left wing. O’Leary battled off Alix Mendez’ challenges well and finished across goal at a tight-angle to put The Hoops in the driving seat.

Three late goals from Jessica Hennesy, Larkin and O’Leary put the game beyond doubt.

The win sees The Hoops move just one point shy of Peamount United in the table. They’ll look to maintain their title challenge when travel to the midlands to face fifth place Athlone Town next week.

Cork will hope to build on the positive signs shown this evening when host a Sligo Rovers side that’s been faring terribly so far in league life, The Bit O’Red yet to pick up a single point this campaign.

  • 14'

Lia O'Leary breaks down the left wing and whips in a cross that's met by the head of Áine O'Gorman, the captain's header drawing a good diving save from Walsh.

  • 11'

Savannah McCarthy is presented with an opportunity at the other end, going for a curling effort that's safely collected by Hannah Walsh.

  • 9'

Lauren Walsh finds the ball on the edge of Rovers' box and attempts to drill a shot into the bottom corner, her effort falling straight into Budden's gloves.

  • 4'

Eva Managn hits a free-kick from 25 yards out that lacks the pace and power to challenge Amanda Budden as her shot falls safely into the keeper's hands.

  • 1'

And we're off! The hosts get the action underway.

  • Just the one change for Cork from the 3-1 defeat to Bohemians, Danielle Burke picked in favour of Niamh Cotter.

  • Jaimie Thompson and April player of the month Jessica Hennesy both start for The Hoops despite concerns about fitness levels mid-week. Orlaith O'Mahony makes her return to the starting XI after not featuring against Peamount last week, replacing Aoife Kelly in the midfield.

  • Murphy insists he won't compromise on an attacking game plan despite Rovers scoring 16 goals in just seven outings this season. "We’re not going there to sit back and defend. We’re going to go up and enjoy it. If you give them too much respect, they’ll make you look a very poor side. We’ve got to go up there and not give them any respect and get after them."

  • Cork will look to rebound after a difficult 3-1 loss to Bohemians, manager Danny Murphy feeling the result was emblematic of The Rebel Army's whole season. “We done some really good things against Bohs. We struggled to create anything in the final third. The three goals we gave away are all three goals we could do better with," Murphy said. "For the first goal we shouldn’t have been in the position to give the freekick away. The second goal we could let the ball go out for a goal kick and (we) concede from the corner. The Third goal was just a mistake by 3 or 4 people and it led to them having an opportunity to score. “That’s the story of us as a club so far (this season) we consistently make those mistakes”.

  • O'Neill believes his opposition tonight are a far better outfit than their results may suggest. “The results haven’t done their performances justice really. Even when you look at their game against Bohs the weekend, for very large periods of it I think Cork were the better side. “It is going to be a tough one on Saturday, they do have some top players in Jesse Mendez and Eva Mangan, particularly in the middle. They’ll be the ones who’ll look to get Cork ticking on Saturday.”

  • Rovers come off a stalemate against Peamount United, in which Amanda Budden salvaged a point for The Hoops through a string of dramatic stops and a last-minute penalty save. Manager Collie O'Neill says he was content with the point and was quick to sing Budden's praises after the match. "I’m very, very happy with the point. It’s probably a little bit more than what we deserved on the whole balance of play, but overall, to come away from there with a point against the current league leaders is good,” he said. “It’s great to have good players like Amanda that can stand up in those vital times towards the end of games to get us something.”

  • Evening all, and welcome along to tonight's live updates of Shamrock Rovers vs Cork City. Rovers, who sit third in league standings square off against a Cork City side that has struggled for form this campaign, their draw against Treaty United forming their solitary point of the season.
