Match Report

Hoare strikes late to salvage a point for Rovers

A dramatic finish saw Sean Hoare head home to earn Rovers a point at the death as they drew 4-4 in Tallaght against Cork City in a game that had absolutely everything.

From the gun The Hoops looked to be in control, their midfielders were seemingly allowed to operate with full creative license, Jack Byrne and Trevor Clarke consistently picking the ball up in the half-spaces and breaking The Rebel Army’s backline.

It wasn’t long before Rovers converted that control into something concrete, a in-swinging corner caused chaos in the box in the 13th minute. Jimmy Corcoran was forced to make a spectuclar double save, but his defenders consistently failed to clear their lines as Rory Gaffney stole the ball and poked it home from six yards out.

It looked like Rovers might have entered cruise control from there, as they continued to linger in Cork’s final third. Markus Poom was ever so close to doubling the lead-a sweetly hit free-kick clearing the wall and rattling off the crossbar.

There should have been cause for concern though as despite their attacking exploits Ruairí Keating and Cian Bargary continued to pick up the ball and weave through their defense with acres of space.

Sure enough, those initial threats came to fruition when Bargrary picked up the ball on the right-hand flank and was left it far too much times to think, as he poked a ball into the six yard box that would be snapped up by Keating and flicked past Mannus.

The Hoops’ miseries were compiled when a clearance from Mannus fell at the feet of Darragh Crowley 35 yards out. Crowley took a quick look up and then went for the spectular, the lob produced a thing of beauty, the ball not touching the ground once before it rippled the back of the net.

Rovers came out the second half looking slightly winded, the momentum firmly with the visitors. Yet in the 54th minute it was Lee Grace who rose above them all to catch the end of a Jack Byrne corner and nod the ball home.

Again, the job was shortlived for not five minutes later Kevin Cusovic thumped the ball home from point-blank range to restore his side’s lead and secured the win for his side. Simon Power soon cut the deficit, but it didn’t look to be enough to salvage a point. Step up Sean Hoare, who with an extra-time header, sent Hoops fans into ectacy.

What had been a brilliant match was slightly tainted after Aaron Bolger bore the brunt of a clash of heads around the eightieth minute. Bolger received on-field medical treatment for roughly ten minutes and was eventually stretchered off. We wish him a speedy recovery.

For Rovers this draw will feel like a win, even though the gap to Derry City at the top of the table grows to seven point. The Hoops have made no secret of wanting the match the feats of Pat Byrne’s mid-eighties side, who completed a historic four on the trot, but it looks already quite far out of reach.

Aaron Bolger has been stretchered off the pitch-it'll be a minimum of ten minutes of extra time.

  • 87'

There's been a worrying clash of heads here in Tallaght. Medical staff have taken to the pitch and stretches have been called. Aaron Bolger the player who's suffered the brunt of the force, wishing him a speedy recovery.

  • 82'

Simon powers cut's the defecit in half to set up a grandstand finish!

  • 75'

Rovers desperately need to find a way back into this match or their aims for a historic four-in-a-row will be dead an buried.

  • 70'

Gary O'Neill meets a free header in the box and nods it onto the crossbar! No one's there to convert the rebound

  • 69'

It's another for Darragh Crolwey, and this may very well be the dagger in the Hoops chest.

  • 58'

Cork takes the lead again! A goal-line scramble falls to the feet of Kevin Custovic who thumps it straight down the middle and past Mannus.

  • 54'

Rovers equalise! Jack Byrne whips in a corner and Lee Grace rises above them all to nod home a huge header for The Hoops.

  • 48'

Neil Farrugia replaces Darragh Nugent as Stephen Bradley looks to some additional firepower

  • 46'

    And we're back underway!

  • 45'

Jack Byrne has had a golden opportunity to level with a one-on-one but his shot is tame and mishit.

  • 44'

Rovers have had control of 80% of this match, but they've been so frail defensively. Whenever Keating and Bargary have received the ball they've had so much time to figure out exactly what to do with it.

  • 38'

It\'s an unbelievable goal from Darragh Crowley, who lobs Mannus 35 yards out after a forced clearance. The ball didn\'t hit the ground once before it saw the back of the net!

  • 35'

The 200 or so travelling Cork fans are now well and truly swinging, flares and all!

  • 32'

Cork level! Darragh Crowley is given far too much space on the right side and puts a perfect ball into the six-yard box without any pressure. Keating beats Grace to the ball and flicks it past Mannus.

  • 28'

Cork have had real problems dealing with their right-hand-side. Clarke's had virtually free roam as he puts in another inviting cross that somehow fails to connect with any players in the box.

  • 25'

It's been all Rovers so far. Clarke whips in a ball from the left that just grazes Kenny's head and eventually recovered by the Rebel Army.

  • 23'

Johhn Kenny receives the ball with the back to goal, takes it on the half-turn and so nearly-slots it into the bottom right corner, just inches away.

  • 21'

Poom hits the crossbar! A beauty of a free kick from 20 yards out verves past Cork's wall and looks to be heading for that top-right corner before rattling off the woodwork.

  • 18'

Keating picks up the ball and weaves through midfield before laying it off and earning a free 20 yards out. Matthew Healy cant make the most out of it as his effort fizzes well over the bar.

  • 14'

Corcoran will surely be furious at his defenders who failed to clear their lines on multiple occasions before that goal.

  • 13'

Goal! Rory Gaffney slots in from close range after what was a brilliant double-save from Jimmy Corcoran.

  • 11'

Byrne just hits it with a bit too much curl and height.

  • 10'

It\'s a free kick for Rovers. 20 yards out and in a menacing position.

  • 8'

Krezic finds himself in acres of space behind Rovers line but a poor first touch lets him down and The Hoops recover comfortably.

  • 6'

Rovers are off to a good start here! Jack Byrne in particular has been doing an excellent job and receiving the ball in the half spaces and breaking the lines.

  • 4'

Byrne release Clarke on the left-hand flank with a lovely through ball who then crosses it to the incoming Rory Gaffney who just strikes wide.

  • 2'

Mannus collects a dangerous cross from Krezic

  • 1'

Cork get the play under way!

  • It was this fixture four years ago where Jack Byrne scored one of his best goals in a Rovers kit, an absolute belter from 25 yards out. https://twitter.com/i/status/1632757942771646472

  • The players have just got done wrapping up their warm-ups and now head for the tunnels.

  • For Cork it's an unchanged line-up from Friday's match. Ruairí Keating and Matthew Healy both got on the scoresheet that night, and they'll feel confident in getting the best out of a Rovers defense that has had some serious tempermant issues-they've received three red cards in as many games.

  • Rovers welcome back defenders Lee Grace and Daniel Cleary into the starting XI as they return from suspension. New signees Markus Poom and Johnny Kenny start. Rory Gaffney leads the line as talisman Jack Byrne hopes to provide plenty of chances and make a return to his best form.

  • The last clash between these two teams came on 10 May 2021, where Rovers came out on top 3-0.

  • Bradley is aware of the potent threat the Rebel Army and manager Colin Healy possess, saying: “I think what you’ll get with Colin’s teams is a team that’s really well organised and they know their jobs …They’ll go to win the game, we’ve got to respect that and I’m sure we will, as we do every opponent. If you look at Cork as a team, they have real pace in their team so we’ve got to respect that as well.”

  • It's been a torrid start to the season for Rovers, who've picked up just two points in three outings. They face an exciting Cork City side fresh off a 4-0 trashing of UCD. A loss tonight and a win for Derry would leave The Hoops eight points adrift of the title, and put those dreams of a 4-in-a-row firmly in the balance.

  • Evening folks and welcome along to tonight's match report. It's been a cold and wet evening so far but things look to be clearing up just in time for kick-off.
