Burt Returns Rovers To Winning Ways
Shamrock Rovers’ return to league action saw them defeat Cork City at Tallaght Stadium and in doing so restore their four point lead at the top of the Premier Division table.
The three goals scored in this game were three fantastic strikes. Graham Burke gave Rovers the lead in the 29th minute but Barry Coffey levelled for City in the 35th minute. Liam Burt’s goal in the 50th minute decided the game which was Rovers first win over City this season.
It was an even opening quarter with no real chances of note. In the 19th minute Burke had a chance to open the scoring but his shot came off the post. Minutes later City keeper Ollie Byrne pulled off a good save to deny Liam Burt. Cork defended well and tried to break on the counter. Markus Poom had a header that went wide in the 27th minute.
Rovers took the lead in the 29th minute; Burt played the ball to Burke, he teased the City defence before firing a superb shot to the net. City were back on level terms in the 35th minute. Ronan Finn fouled Aaron Bolger and a free was awarded. Coffey stepped up and hit a terrific strike past Alan Mannus. The Rovers keeper maybe could’ve done better.
Both sides had chances after that. In the 38th minute Coffey played the ball over to Jaze Kabia but he blasted his shot over. Down the other end Burt dragged his shot wide. Cian Bargary played the ball over to Coffey in the 43rd minute but his well struck effort was straight at Mannus.
Five minutes into the second half and Rovers were back in front again; a good counter ended with Burt picking up Poom’s ball, he took on a number of players before finishing off an unbelievable solo effort.
It was all Rovers in the second half. Burke had a shot that was deflected out for a corner while in the 69th minute his free brought an excellent save out of Byrne. Substitute Richie Towell had a chance but his effort was just over in the 73rd minute.
The visitors had their first effort on goal in the second half in the 79th minute; Bargary cut inside but his effort just sailed over the bar.
They pressed for an equaliser while Rovers tried to get them on the counter and Aaron Greene squandered a great chance to score their third goal at the end.
