Match Report

Cork Edge Eight Man Hoops in Ill-tempered Affair

Ruairi Keating’s 84th minute strike was enough as Cork City overcame a Shamrock Rovers team who played nearly half an hour with eight men.

City started the brighter in the opening few minutes through Tunde Owolabi but their final product in the final third left them down.

Rovers on the otherhand, began to come into the game around the 10th minute mark with Richie Towell testing Jimmy Corcoran on a couple of occasions early on.

Estonian international Markus Poom also tested the City keeper with a header and a half volley which flew just over the crossbar after fifteen minutes. Gary O’Neill was also influential for the visitors.

Towell reappeared just after the half hour to force Corcoran into a fine save in the bottom left-hand corner as City tried their best to stay in the game in what was a backs to the wall performance.

Their fortunes would change slightly however as Towell would be sent off in the 37th minute for an off the ball challenge on Ruairi Keating. The former Dundalk player appeared to catch him on the foot as City corner was being sent in.

That would not be the last of the red cards for Rovers however as events would take an incredible turn in the space of four minutes. Firstly Johnny Kenny, who’d only been on for four minutes was sent off on the hour mark before Sean Hoare received his marching orders to leave Rovers with eight players after 64 minutes.

Shocking ill-discipline aside, Rovers to their credit, hung in there as City poured forward trying to make their advantage count. Keating went the closest in the 74th minute but his glancing header went just wide of the post.

The striker would finally break the deadlock however ten minutes later when he finished home an excellent cross from Kevin Custovic.

Ultimately that would be enough for City to pick up their second win in a row in what was a remarkable turn of events in Turners Cross.

  • 46'

Back underway. There doesn't appear to be any changes to the sides as we recommence.

  • Half time with a pretty dramatic ending. Richie Towell got sent off for what would appeared to be a stamp on Ruari Keating inside the box with the former Dundalk midfielder coming down on Keating's foot while a corner was being sent in. Rovers staff memeber Gary Cronin was also booked in a separate incident. Anyways, scoreless at the break.

  • 43'

A member of the Rovers backroom team has now also been shown a yellow.

  • 37'

Richie Towell is sent off for an incident off the ball which was spotted by the linesmen, more information when we get it. Rovers down to 10.

  • 34'

  • 30'

Brief stoppage as Owolabi gets treatment but is ok to continue.

  • 30'

Gary O'Neill proving to be very influential for Rovers in midfield, he takes a shot on goal himself but thankfully for Jimmy Corcoran it flies over his crossbar.

  • 25'

Still scoreless but City very much playing second fiddle in this game so far.

  • 16'

Marcus Poom has had a couple of efforts recently; one from a header while another from a half volley which flew just over the bar. Rovers beginning to turn the screw.

  • 8'

Both sides still looking to feel eachother out with Richie Towell the only player to have a shot in the past few minutes. His effort flew left and wide of the target however.

  • 2'

Half chance for Cork who look to start this game quickly but Tunde Owulabi is unable to link the play in order to get a shot away.

  • 1'

    Game on.
