Match Report

Dalymount frenzy as Bohs snatch late victory

Bohemians came from behind as two late goals from James McManus and Jonathan Afolabi in the final ten minutes to snatch a win for the home side against Dundalk in an incredible game at Dalymount Park.

It looked as if the Lilywhites were on course to another victory and to take the points home to Oriel only to be undone in the final moments of the contest as goals from Connor Malley and Yli-Kokko cancelled out an early Bohemians goal in a game that could have gone either way.

Dundalk were called into defensive duties early with Nathan Sheppard forced to make a great save after Jonathan Afolabi got a shot away that was denied by the Dundalk keeper, in the second phase of that attacking play Jordan Flores pass found Afolabi again only for his header to go wide. Flores was next to test the Dundalk defence with a free kick that he struck low with his intended target Afolabi strayed just offside. That intense early pressure for Bohs was to pay off with James McManus opening the scoring with the continued high press from the home side saw Afolabi send the ball into the area, and it evaded the first Bohs attacker but McManus was on hand to slot it past Sheppard with ease.

Dundalk responded well to the concession with an equaliser mid-way through the first half as Connor Malley headed the ball down to Yli-Kokko who got just ahead of the two centre-backs and he calmly slotted it past Talbot with ease. Adam McDonnell had an excellent chance to put the home side back in front as he bobbed and weaved towards Hayden Muller but his effort from the edge of the area went well wide. Dundalk were to go ahead just before half-time as a free kick for Dundalk was played cross-field to Archie Davies who put in an excellent ball to the onrushing Connor Malley who headed it past Talbot.

Dundalk had an early chance in the second half to extend their lead as a Malley free kick was whipped into the Bohemians area but it bounced past Hoban at the crucial moment and wide. Bohemians have two snap shots from the edge of the area but both failed to trouble the Dundalk keeper or defence. Dundalk were slightly quiet in terms of attacking threat until Connor Malley struck an excellent ball from the edge of the area with the second ball that was sent in from Archie Davies nearly met Patrick Hoban but the ball just evaded the Dundalk number nine.

Bohemians had a great chance to level as McDaid's ball was sent in for McDonnell but Hayden Muller and Sheppard combined to clear the ball with Muller hooking the ball off the line. Sheppard went down injured and had to get extensive getting treatment for a head injury following that attack.  The home side continued to search for an equalizer with Afolabi having a good chance that he miskicked away from goal before Flores had a shot that was easy for Shepperd to save.

Bohemians were to go on and score two quick-fire goals to seal the victory in the final minutes of the contest in what is a massive turning point of this season. Kris Twardek and McManus combined as the two substitutes made an immediate impact to level the tie here with McManus latching onto the Canadians' cross. With Dundalk pushing numbers for another chance of a lead Jonathan Afolabi latched onto a defence-splitting pass and he broke free to slide the ball under Sheppard to snatch the win.
