Match Report

Bray Beat Cobh at The Carlisle Grounds

Bray Wanderers put an end to their winless run and stopped Cobh from their 5th in a row with a 2-1 victory at the Carlisle Grounds.

Goals from Chris Lyons and Conor Knight gave the Seagulls their 9th win of the season, their first since the start of September.

It was the home side who were playing like the third placed side in the division, and they dominated the opening half. Chances from Omorehiomwan and Lyons had the home faithful purring, and it was in the 28th minute when their efforts finally came to fruition. A lovely whipped in free kick by Darren Craven was met with a deft flick on header by Lyons which looped over Steacy and gave the Seagulls number nine his eight-league goal of the season.

Cobh’s only chance of note of the first half produced a top class save from Connor in the Bray goal, as his fingertip save prevented Brendan Frahill from equalising. However, it was the home side who would find the net once again just four minutes later. Some brilliant play from Craven allowed him to get a shot off, which Steacy could only parry. It fell to the feet of Conor Knight who, in his first league start for the Wicklow side, showed coolness beyond his years to calmly volley the ball home into the far corner and put Bray two goals to the good going into the second half.

The second half failed to produce many chances all game, Cobh huffed and puffed but could not find their way through a resolute Bray defence right up until the last kick of the game where Connor dropped a corner and there to pounce was Brendan Frahill, much too late to salvage anything. The home side did not create much themselves, with the biggest moment being a squandered two-on-one where Craven over-hit his pass through to Lyons. Bray now move back up to 6th, above Longford who play tomorrow as Cobh’s grip on third is cut to five points.

  • 96'

Frahill scores for Cobh with the last kick of the game, too little too late and it is three points for Bray as the referee blows the whistle immediately after kick off. Thank you for joining me this evening.

  • 94'

Waweru misses as sitter as a cross drops to his feet right on the goal line and he somehow volleys it wide.

  • 90'

    Five minutes of added time.

  • 88'

Double Bray change follows, Morgan and Cooney on for Thompson and Groome.

  • 86'

Another Cobh change with Abbott replacing Holland.

  • 84'

Third Bray change with Davis on for Knight.

  • 76'

Two changes for Cobh aswell, O'Leary and Lyons for Rowe and McKevitt.

  • 76'

Bray make their first substitutions, Mahdy and Crowley on for Lyons and Almirall.

  • 71'

Massive chance for Bray as they go two on one but Craven over hits his pass to Lyons.

  • 70'

Holland into the book for a late challenge on Knight.

  • 67'

Double change for Cobh, Byrne and O'Brien off, Waweru and Desmond on.

  • 63'

McKevitt and Hudson booked for some pushing after the Cobh man committed a foul.

  • 61'

Almost a second for Lyons as a fantastic effort from out wide just curls over the bar.

  • 58'

Shane Keegan goes into the book as he is irate over the referee not awarding his side a free kick.

  • 56'

Cobh slowly turning up the gears here, getting down the left hand side numerous times in the last five minutes.

  • 51'

Almirall with a header from a corner that goes just wide of the near post.

  • 45'

Back underway for the second half.

  • 46'

Half time and Bray are deservedly two goals to the good. Cobh seemingly out of sorts. Let's see what the second half will bring.

  • 45'

    One minute added on.

  • 44'

Almost a second for Knight as he roulettes past his man and his low shot is pushed out for a Bray corner.

  • 38'

Bray double their lead! It comes from the man in for his first start, Conor Knight. Darren Craven's shot is pushed out by Steacy, only as far as the Bray winger, who calmly rolls it home. 2-0!

  • 34'

Massive save from Connor in the Bray net. Rowe puts in a good corner and it is flicked on by Frahill. The Bray shotstopper is equal to it with a fingertip save to push it away.

  • 33'

Second booking for Bray, this time it is Almirall for a mistimed slide tackle.

  • 28'

Finally the goal arrives for Bray! It's a lovely whipped in free kick by Craven and it's met by the head of Chris Lyons, his finish looping over Steacy. 1-0 to the home side!

  • 25'

First card of the game goes to Omorehiomwan.

  • 25'

Chris Lyons gets in behind the Cobh backline but his outside of the boot effort is easy enough to save for Steacy.

  • 15'

Bray looking the more likely to score at the moment, just not getting the space to get shots off.

  • 7'

First chance of note of the game is for Bray. Corner whipped in and Omorehiomwan volleys over from about the penalty spot. Should really have kept it down.

  • Game kicks off.

  • Both teams on their way out of the dressing rooms now, if it's anything like their last encounter, we should be in for an entertaining game tonight.

  • Three changes for Bray with one being a first start of the season for Conor Knight. Cobh make two themselves with Charlie O'Brien and captain for tonight Dale Holland in.

  • Good evening and welcome to tonight's game between Bray Wanderers and Cobh Ramblers. Team news to follow soon.
