Match Report

Bray steal last minute point in Cobh thriller

Bray Wanderers snatched a draw in the dying seconds of the game against Cobh Ramblers, coming from behind twice to draw 3-3 in a pulsating encounter at St Coleman’s Park.

A fabulous Guillermo Almirall free kick in the 92nd minute gave Bray a vital point in Cork. This came after a double from Wilson Waweru and a Jack Doherty penalty had put Cobh 3-1 up with fifteen to go.

Bray have shot themselves in the foot on numerous occasions this season and one of the worst of them all occurred within the first minute. A long ball up from Lee Steacy was allowed bounce and Jack Doherty managed to wriggle in behind makeshift centre half Seán Quinn who dragged the Cobh midfielder down and the referee pointed to the spot. Doherty dusted himself down and stepped up for the penalty, slotting past Matthew Connor to give Cobh a 1-0 lead within the first 90 seconds of the game.

Cobh continued to play long balls over the Bray defence, and it caused nightmares for the Seagulls back-line, with Wilson Waweru missing not one, but two guilt edge chances as a result of the “Ramblers” clearly thought-out tactic.

In the 30th minute however, the away side struck level through a stroke of genius. Bray worked the ball out wide left as Callum Thompson laid the ball off to Dane Massey. The experienced full back stepped onto the ball and his first touch was a sensational curling effort which looped over Steacy in the Cobh net and levelled the game, much to everyone’s surprise.

Just over two minutes later though and Cobh were back in front. Same tactic to the first goal and the same result. It was Waweru in behind once more and unlike his previous two efforts, he made no mistake and rounded Connor to tap into an empty net and restore the home side’s lead going into half-time.

Bray started the second half well and kept much of the possession but could not find the killing edge. They were made to pay for this too when Waweru grabbed his second. A lovely, whipped cross from Mikey Rowe found the Cobh striker at the back post to volley into the roof of the net and put the home side 3-1 ahead and seemingly out of sight with fifteen minutes to go.

Bray were undeterred and finally found the clinical dynamism they were lacking a few minutes later and pulled a goal back. Ben Feeney played a ball out wide which Darren Craven ran onto. He bested Lyons and smashed a ball across goal which Feeney, who had continued into the box after his pass, ran onto. His sliding effort snuck in at the near post and brought Bray once again back to just a goal apart.

In the 92nd minute, when Cobh had seemed like they had saw off the Bray threat, the away side won a free kick on the edge of the box. Up stepped Spaniard Almirall and his curling left footed effort stunned all and flew into the top corner, sending the Bray bench into raptures as the “Wanderers” came away with a draw after tethering on the verge of defeat all night.
