Cobh come from behind to see off Bray
A Luke Desmond inspired comeback saw Cobh come from behind to defeat Bray Wanderers 3-1 at St. Colman’s Park.
After a scrappy opening to proceedings, the first chance of the game went to Bray’s Ben Feeney who headed wide from an excellent Cian Waters cross in the seventh minute.
Cobh had chances of their own minutes later through Jake Hegarty whose left-footed effort went inches wide of the right-hand post.
Cobh’s bad luck at home continued in the 29th minute when Conor Drinan’s tackle was deemed to be a penalty, much to the annoyance of the home support. Kurtis Byrne duly slotted to give Bray a 1-0 lead.
Bray’s lead would only last five minutes however as Jake Hegarty levelled for the hosts with a great header from a well-worked corner to make it 1-1.
That goal gave the Rams a much-needed boost as they finished the half the stronger. In fact, the hosts could have gone in ahead at the break when Jason Abbott’s free-kick missed a necessary Cobh head for what would have been a certain goal.
The hosts continued where they left off at the beginning of the second half with Bray looking very fragile at the back when the ball was in the final third.
This fragility showed again in the 55th minute when Conor Drinan headed a long ball into Luke Desmond who smashed the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 to the Rams.
Bray manager Pat Devlin rang the changes on the hour mark to try and affect the game. Jamie Hollywood in particular was impressive in the midfield when he came on.
Despite this Bray were lucky to have eleven men on the field when Dean Zambra cynically pulled back Conor Drinan who was running through on goal.
Bray continued to push for an equaliser while James O’Leary nearly made it 3-1 but his shot hit the side netting with ten minutes to go.
Darren O’Sullivan Connell struck a fantastic free kick in the 88th minute to seal Shane Keegan’s first victory in charge and only a third win of the season.
