Match Report

Bray earn home draw with Cobh

Bray Wanderers came from behind to salvage a point, in a 1-1 draw with Cobh Ramblers at the Carlisle Grounds this evening.

The third draw for the hosts in their last five games, the result sees them slip up against the sides ahead, Kurtis Byrne the man who’s goals have been vital this season so far, finding the target.

After a better spell of possession early it looked like Bray would score first, but a penalty missed by Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh, led to Conor Drinnan finding the net after 23 minutes.

The game started slow with Bray having the better of the possession, a couple of half chances a Karl Manahan shot that flashed wide of the Cobh goal the only major attempt in a slow opening ten minutes.

We had signs of life after 21 minutes, the referee pointing to the spot for a Cobh penalty, up stepped O’Brien Whitmarsh who shot down the middle only for Michael Kelly to tip over the bar. From the resulting corner the Rams took the lead, Ben O’Riordan hit a low shot at the back post, but it was Drinnan who found the net, his third goal in as many games.

Bray looked to come back into the game but failed to create any notable chances, with two minutes added on at the end of the half, they found the net in the first minute a great move down the left channel, Paul Fox found Kurtis Byrne in space he faked a shot on his right foot, before turning and finding the net from range with his left. Bray’s top scorer so far this season, coming up trumps again.

Into the second half, the hosts remained that little bit on top Byrne tried the audacious from the halfway line early, Rob Manley caused issues in the box a header just went wide, before he hit the post with another effort.

Both goalkeepers somehow kept the tie at 1-1, Kelly denied Whitmarsh before being called upon for a follow up, after making a meal of whether to come out or not, at the other end it was Sean Barron who saved well to deny Manley.

Bray had a call for a penalty after 77 minutes, but the referee waved away the protests for the hand ball in the area, it remained the hosts having all the chances Byrne’s free hit the wall, before Kieran Marty Waters hit a cross into the box but it led to nothing.
