Cobh Ramblers finish league campaign with big win in Bray
Cobh Ramblers concluded a challenging First Division campaign on a high, as they comprehensively outplayed Bray Wanderers to win 5-1 and take the spoils at The Carlisle Grounds tonight.
Both these sides came into this game in lowly league positions, Cobh looking to finish strongly and Bray to improve on a miserable home record of just two wins all season at the Carlisle Grounds.
They made the perfect start when Callum Thompson, electric early on, surged down the wing and squared a pass infield. Arriving onto it was Ben Feeney and his peach of a strike sailed into the top corner.
However, Cobh were not for lying down and levelled within minutes. Poor home defending from a Cobh corner left a chance for Liam Desmond to bury and bury it he did, with aplomb.
In a bitty opening half, Thompson came closest to scoring next when his long-range effort skimmed the crossbar, the half’s last act.
Cobh captain, John Kavanagh, put the visitors into the lead on the hour mark, the right-back in the right place at the right time to celebrate his first Cobh Ramblers goal!
Liam Kervick was causing Bray all manners of problems down the wing, and he got the goal his performance merited. Stephen McGuinness couldn’t claim a corner, Justin Eguaibor leapt highest and headed across for Kervick to tuck home. 3-1 and breathing space.
Top scorer, Beneion O’Brien Whitmarsh, added to the hosts’ agony with a minute remaining when he raced clear of an alarmingly static backline and slotted home with ease.
The rout was confirmed then in injury time as Jake Hegarty flicked on and Desmond rounded McGuiness, slotted the ball in and had himself a well-taken brace.
So, despite their league difficulties, Cobh will certainly enjoy this result which was merited as they were far by far the better team tonight.
Bray, meanwhile, travel to Champions Cork City next in their final match. If they play as poorly and as porously as they did here, it could be an even bigger hammering that they receive

Apologies, it was actually Luke Desmond who scored the fifth Cobh goal there, his second of the night and a fine finish to a terrific night for Cobh
FULL TIME: A difficult season ends on a high for Cobh! Bray's atrocious home form ends here for this season, they conclude at Champions Cork City next weekend and will face a tanking if they don't sharpen their act together
GOAL: Hegarty wins a flick on and Whitmarsh races through, unopposed and slots home with ease
Beineon Whitmarsh rubs salt in Bray wounds as he applies a clinical touch to a Cobh ball in. He's their top scorer and Ramblers are running amok here now!
In fairness mind, Cobh have thoroughly outplayed a Bray side who after scoring and bar Feeney, haven't shown much interest at all
Ramblers are toying with Bray now, it'll be a disgruntled home crowd again tonight
Kervick departs for Darragh Connell and Jake Hegarty replaces Sean McGrath whilst Thompson, so lively earlier is replaced by Darragh Lynch.
That is Kervick's first Cobh Ramblers goal, a great moment for him and also for Kavanagh, whose strike earlier was his first too!
GOAL: And it is three now! Kervick taps home after McGuinness spills a corner, Justin Eguiabor heads back across and Kervick pounces gleefully to tap in!
Into the final twenty minutes now, Cobh looking a threat on the counterattack. More threatening than Bray anyhow, who are now faced with breaking down a resilient Ramblers backline
Josh McGlone replaces the quiet Evan Harte
CROSSBAR: So close to 2-2 as Feeney lashes a piledriver in on goal which slams the upright!
Issa Kirgbo the first booked for a clumsy challenge
Cobh ahead and that has been coming! Captain John Kavanagh finishes like a forward from O'Connell's pass and that is just rewards!
Liam Kervick scampers away down the wing but there is nobody there to apply a finishing touch to his cross in. Bray looks like they want the season to end right now, to be honest
SAVE: Again, its McGuinness to Bray's rescue as he does well to parry O'Connell's effort
KICK OFF: Back underway
HALF TIME: 1-1 and the sides go in all square at the break
CHANCE: Now Bray go on the offensive as Feeney's shot is blocked and the resultant ball back in is acrobatically punched away by Cobh goalkeeper, Darragh Burke!
CHANCE: O'Connell heads high from a teasing cross in, Ramblers may be bottom but they are playing better here
Cobh shading it slightly as we approach half time but in truth, this game needs another goal or something to inject it into life
CHANCE: Cobh's goal scorer last week, Danny O'Connell, is proving a pest up front but can't quite get enough conviction on his shot, which McGuiness smothers
CHANCE: Feeney pokes it wide after a Cobh mix-up defensively, the visitors have got away with one there!
A scrappy period now, best surmised by Conor Clifford wafting a free kick in only for his attackers to be offside
SAVE: Stephen McGuinness keeps Bray level as he saves comfortably after Dale Holland got in behind, all too easily
GOAL: Equaliser for Cobh as Luke Desmond pounces on poor home defending and stabs home from a corner! Some start here!
GOAL: Thompson with another mesmerising run, he creates the space and tees up Ben Feeney, who from the edge of the box, lashes a rocket into the net! 1-0 Bray!
Bray's Callum Thompson with some nifty footwork and mazy dribbles that are so far the highlight
