Match Report

Lopes Moves Rovers Four Clear At The Summit

Shamrock Rovers bolstered their aspirations of four-in-a-row with a 1-0 win over Dundalk in Tallaght this evening.

Rovers were the brighter team in the opening 30 minutes, but began to fall under heavy pressure on the break as the first half drew to a close. John Martin hit the post falling chaos in the Rovers box, Daryl Horgan also go pain-strikingly close to an opener.

Pico Lopes eventually broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, rising high to head home from a Dylan Watts cross and give his side all three points.

Like their previous match against Shelbourne, Rovers enjoyed a promising opening 30 minutes, dominating the central areas and stringing some swift passing moves together with succinct movement.

For all their share of the ball, the hosts’ decision making in the final thirds oft left much to be desired, Graham Burke routinely overhitting his crosses and shooting from long-distances without much luck.

Rory Gaffney most likely had the best chance of the half for Rovers-an overambitious half volley from a tight angle in the 10th minute that sent Nathan Shepperd sprawling.

As the first half began to draw to a close, The Hoops’ looked increasingly more and more exposed on the break. Dundalk began to pile the pressure on, and soon became the dominant side as they probed the Shamrock Rovers box relentlessly.

Archie Davies was afforded too much space on the right flank too often, a whipped cross to John Martin drawing a diving save from Alan Mannus to paw the ball away from the bottom-left corner.

Minutes later it was Davies and Martin again causing chaos in the box, haphazard defending from Rovers allowing Davies to open his body and fire across the goal. Davies’ shot was deflected, Martin pouncing and sending the ball crashing on to the left post.

Rovers were living on the knife-edge before half-time, Daryl Horgan firing a shot inches wide from Mannus’ post before Neil Doyle blew the whistle for the interval.

The league leaders again came out the break the better side, Rory Gaffney finishing off a Liam Burt cross at the back post, the fourth official immediately flagging the goal for offside.

Stephen Bradley’s squad eventually got their chance to celebrate in the 62nd minute, Dylan Watts swinging a corner onto the head of Pico Lopes, who powered above the Dundalk defence and headed into the back of the net.

Despite a far from convincing performance the host were unable to see out the three points. After all, the ability to pick up results from lacklustre performances is what separates title winners from the rest, and this may in fact prove to be the moment where the balance swung in Rovers’ favour for a historic four-in-a-row.

There’ll be no respite for Shamrock Rovers in the title race, hosting this season’s fourth and final Dublin Derby, facing a Bohemians side in red-hot form.

Dundalk are also thrown right back into the action, welcoming Derry City to the Oriel Park next Friday.

  • “You need a little bit of luck to win the league but to get to the very top you need to beat the teams above you. We’re looking to do that, starting with Rovers on Friday. We know what it takes to beat them. “It’s a mad league this season. I think everyone’s a bit disappointed with where they are because everyone has been inconsistent but it means it’s wide open going into the run-in which is great for everyone.”

  • Dundalk manager Stephen O'Donnell has been quick to play down expectations of a title bid from his side. "I’m not putting any ceiling on it for us but I also know that from where other clubs are at, they have a right to be up there pitching whereas I think we’re still very much sort of trying to punch above our weight, and a work in progress,” O’Donnell said speaking to club media.

  • Rovers enter the clash in dismal form, their draw against Shelbourne extending their record to just two wins in nine. Manager Stephen Bradley expressed his frustration about the performance whilst in conversation with club media: "We should win the game [against Shelbourne] quite comfortably, but we gave up a goal in the last minute, a free header from a corner which is very rare for us, but for large parts we were very good and deserved to win.”

  • Dundalk have gotten the better of Rovers on the last two occasions the sides have met, boasting a 2-0 league win and a 1-0 cup victory both at Oriel Park. The Lilywhites have struggled to get results at Tallaght Stadium as of recent, going four years without a win.

  • Evening all and welcome to tonight's match coverage of Shamrock Rovers vs Dundalk. It's shaping up to be a torrential night of football as the rain keeps pouring down here in Tallaght. Tonight's clash marks a potential six-pointer in the race for the league title, The Hoops leading the charge currently with an eight point cushion over fifth-placed Dundalk.
