Match Report

Drogs stun Derry at Brandywell

Elicha Ahui scored the game’s only goal as Drogheda Utd moved up to fourth in the table, ahead of neighbours Dundalk.

Adui scored from close range in the 78th minute as both teams ended the game with 10 men after Manny Adegboyega (Drogs) and Cameron McJannet (Derry) were sent off. This defeat is Derry’s first of the season.

It was a quiet first quarter. In the 19th minute Will Patching’s strike bounced in front of Drogs keeper Colin McCabe and he put the ball out for a corner.

Drogs were reduced to 10 men in the 26th minute when Adegboyega was sent off for bringing Jamie McGonigle down. It was reckless but the defender won the ball. Drogs manager Kevin Doherty, who was disappointed with the decision, was also shown a red card by referee Arnold Hunter.

In the 42nd minute Ben Doherty played the ball to Patching but he blasted the ball over the bar while in stoppage time a free from Dayle Rooney was flapped by Maher, in the scramble that ensued Derry were able to clear.

Freddie Draper had a good chance for Drogs in the 50th minute; he won the ball, cut inside before hitting a fine strike that was saved by Maher. Derry’s first decent chance of the second half didn’t come until after the hour mark; Doherty with a lovely ball to McGonigle, but his snapshot went over the bar.

In the 67th minute the home side found themselves down to 10 men when McJannet was sent off for a second bookable offence after a foul on Draper. Patrick McEleney brought a fine save out of McCabe in the 77th minute.

Drogs, who had battled throughout, took the lead in the 78th minute; Rooney put a great ball into the box, it was knocked down by Derry’s Cian Kavanagh right in front of Ahui and he made no mistake.

Derry pressed for an equaliser. McCabe brought off a fine save to deny McGonigle in the 86th minute while one minute a handball in the box didn’t yield a penalty for the home side.
