Match Report
Town come from behind to apply to Blues
For the third time this season Waterford and Longford Town could not be separated as the sides played out a very entertaining draw at the RSC.
The previous two games had been drab and dour encounters but there was no repeat tonight. Twice Town came from behind and Waterford finished the game with 10 men after Giles Phillips was sent off for a last man foul on Jordan Adeyemo in the 51st minute.
The home side started well. Six minutes had elapsed on the clock when the Blues opened the scoring; Shane Griffin played a lovely pass into Roland Idowu and he fired an excellent shot past the helpless Jack Brady.
Town came close to an equaliser in the 11th minute; a free from Adam Wixted met the head of Aaron Walsh but his effort came off the crossbar.
In the 18th minute the visitors were back on level terms. A clearance out of defence fell to Gary Armstrong and his fantastic strike from distance found the back of the net. Two minutes later Town conceded a penalty when Shane Elworhty was deemed to have fouled Ryan Burke. It seemed soft enough.
Ronan Coughlan slotted home the penalty with his 28th goal of the season to put the home side back in front. In the 32nd minute Barry Baggley’s curling free came off the crossbar as Waterford pressed for another goal.
A Viktor Serdeniuk free was cleared in the 45th minute and Waterford broke. Idowu played a crossfield pass to Connor Parsons, he played the ball across the box to Baggley but he was denied by a superb save from the Town netminder.
Waterford came very close to grabbing a third goal in the 47th minute; Coughlan with some great play, he passed to Romeo Akachukwu but his powerful shot came off the underside of the crossbar.
The Blues were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute when Phillips was shown a straight red card for taking down Adeyemo who was through on goal. Referee Daniel Murphy had no other option but to point to the spot. O’Brien Whitmarsh stepped up and put away the spot-kick.
Despite being down a man the Blues piled on the pressure with the Town defence having to be firm and resolute. In the 76th minute Parsons squandered a glorious opportunity when he fired over the bar from close range; it was easier to score, than miss.
Couglan and Josh Giurgi had chances for their sides near the end but it ended in a draw.

Lots of changes to both squads now that the transfer window is open. For the first time in a long while Longford Town's bench isn't made up U19 players. Stephen Henderson had been rather unfortunate with suspensions and a long injury list.
