Longford Snatch Two Points Away From Title Chasing Waterford
Longford Town bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Athlone Town to hold title favourites Waterford to a score draw at the RSC.
The home side broke the deadlock in the sixth minute through an own goal from Darragh Lynch. In a game that the home side dominated the visitors leveled matters against the run of play in the 57th minute through substitute Mohamed Boudiaf
The home start started well and just seconds after the kick-off they won their first corner. Their pressure paid off in the sixth minute when Barry Baggley’s corner from the right ended up going off Town’s Darragh Lynch in a crowded area.
Waterford continued to dominate and won a number of corners but as the game went on the visitors settled down and played some nice football. Unfortunately they were unable to create anything to really trouble Blues keeper Paul Martin.
Wassim Aouachria should’ve done better with his effort in the 30th minute. Four minutes later Town keeper Jack Brady denied Connor Parsons as the home side pressed for a second goal.
Town were dealt a blow in the 37th minute when Derek Daly went off injured; the former Blues player had been playing well.
In the space of one minute Chris Conn-Clarke had two long range efforts that came very close to doubling his side’s advantage.
The Blues settled into the second half quickly and piled on the pressure. But against the run of play the visitors drew level in the 57th minute. A pinpoint cross by Shane Elworthy met the head of substitute Mohamed Boudiaf at the back post and he made no mistake.
That goal lifted the visitors with Aodh Dervin excellent at both ends of the field. In the 83rd minute substitute Adam Verdon hit a volley but it went wide.
As the clock ticked down it was the Blues that went in search of a winning goal but the Town held firm with some resolute defending. Deep in stoppage time sub Francis Campbell nearly won it for the Town but his volley just went over.
