Match Report

Waterford grab three goals in win over Longford

Goals in either half from Matthew Dunne (own goal) and Phoenix Patterson saw third place Waterford extend their unbeaten run to five games and open up a four point lead over fourth place Longford Town.

A bizarre own goal put the visitors in front when Luke Dennison somehow let Dunne’s backpass roll by him and over the line. Town failed to trouble Brian Murphy while Patterson clipped the crossbar before half-time. The excellent Patterson sealed the win for the Blues with a stunning individual goal in the 77th minute.

Both sides had a decent start to the game and in the 12th minute Dean McMenamy played his corner over to Dylan Barnett whose shot fell to Matthew Dunne but he didn’t get decent contact on it. Just over 30 seconds later Waterford took the lead through a bizarre own goal; Dunne played the ball back to Town keeper Luke Dennison but he somehow let the ball roll by him and it ended up crossing the line.

In the 18th minute a Shane Griffin free-kick met the head of Eddie Nolan but he directed it just wide. Town were dealt a blow on 27 minutes when the industrious Ryan Graydon went off injured. The visitors sensed the uncertainty in the back for the Town and put on the pressure. For all the possession Waterford had they didn’t really create too many clear-cut chances.

Phoenix Patterson, was a thorn in Town’s side all night and in the 40th minute his shot

just clipped the crossbar. Town’s ball in the final third was poor and Murphy had nothing to do in that first half.

Roland Idowu had a chance in the 57th minute but his effort flew across the face of the goal, it looked like Louis Britton would stab the ball home but Dunne put in a fantastic tackle to deny him.

Town began to come into the game but failed to really trouble Murphy. In the 69th minute Joe Power picked up the ball but hit the side netting with his shot. Right at the end Patterson sealed the win when he picked up possession before hitting an excellent strike.
