Match Report
Longford Town steal the points at the death from valiant 10 men Waterford
Sam Verdon scored right at the death to earn Longford Town victory over 10 men Waterford at the RSC.
Jordan Adeyemo had come off the bench to level for Town in the 84th minute before Verdon grabbed the winner with a header.
The home side had taken the lead in the 18th minute; Sobowale with a neat cross and Shane Griffin with an excellent strike to the left-hand corner of the net.
Waterford were down to 10 men in the 44th minute when Wassim Aouachria was sent off with a straight red for an off the ball incident with Aaron Robinson. It seemed a bizarre decision. There were several cards dished out and it ruined the flow of the game.
Phoenix Patterson cut inside in the 12th minute and put in a cross but it got a deflection off Dylan Barnett and was unable to fall for Aouachria. Minutes later Aouachria put in a cross but it was cleared by Mick McDonnell.
Patterson was a threat all night and caused the Town problems. The home side broke the deadlock in the 18th minute through Griffin.
Town offered nothing in the opening half. They’d a free-kick in the 34th minute on the edge of the box but Barnett’s effort flew into the arms of Brian Murphy.
Just before the break Waterford were reduced to 10 players when Aouachria was sent off; it appeared that 4th official Ray Matthews alerted referee Paul Norton to the incident.
In the 45th minute Darragh Power cleared a Town corner, it fell to Patterson who raced through and put a ball into the box but Town cut the ball out and keeper Luke Dennison was able to clear.
Patterson was fouled in the 51st minute and Griffin took the free but it curled to the right and out for a goal-kick. The superb Patterson took a free in the 67th minute that came crashing off the upright.
There was time for late drama. Dean McMenamy’s shot was stopped by Adeyemo before he finished to the net. Right on the stroke of full-time Verdon struck with a header to give the Midlanders all three points.
