Match Report

Sub Britton earns Waterford a draw with Longford

A headed goal from substitute Louis Britton earned Waterford a dramatic draw against Longford Town at the RSC. Britton rose highest to connect to Junior’s corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

It was hard on the Town who looked to have held on for their third win in a row but Waterford’s persistence deservedly paid off. It was a much needed result for the home side who had lost their previous two games.

Longford Town defender Shane Elworthy had marked his 100th appearance for the club with the game’s opening goal in the 36th minute.Ryan Graydon burst through and hit a superb strike that came off the crossbar, Darren Craven’s header on the rebound was cleared off the line but fell nicely to Elworthy who fired home from close range.

It was a positive start from both sides. Sam Verdon brought a save out of the Blues keeper Brian Murphy within seconds of the start. The pace of the game then dropped and despite having creating chances neither keeper was forced into making a save of note.

Town took the lead in the 36th minute through Elworthy. Waterford tried to get back into the game. They created several scoring opportunities in the second half but were thwarted on a number of occasions by Town keeper Luke Dennison.

Richard Taylor caused Town a few problems at the beginning of the second half. In the 59th minute Kevin Joshua scooped the ball over the bar from a corner. Dennison made a terrific save from Shane Griffin in the 62nd minute.

Dennison was lucky to escape with a yellow card minutes later when he came rushing out of the box and appeared to clip Cian Kavanagh. After soaking up all the pressure, Town forced three corners in a row late on in the game.

As the clock ticked down Waterford pressed for the equaliser. Dennison made a superb save to tip Roland Idowu’s strike over the bar. From the resulting corner Kavanagh headed over. In the third minute of stoppage time Waterford won a corner. Junior whipped it in and Britton sent the RSC into raptures.
