Blues Held To Stalemate In Bishopsgate
Waterford are now 12 points behind leaders Galway Utd as they played out a uneventful scoreless draw at Bishopsgate this evening.
In a game that had more bookings than clear-cut chances the only real save of note was made in the 61st minute when Town keeper Jack Brady denied Thomas Oluwu.
This is the second time this season that the Town and the Blues have drawn. This game failed to excite the small crowd in the region of 350 spectators.
It was a drab and dour first half where both keepers made just routine saves and weren’t stretched too much. Aodh Dervin had a chance in the 11th minute but Paul Martin was able to stop it. Minutes later Oluwa headed over from a corner. Dervin did great tracking back to claim the ball from Connor Parsons in the 25th minute as Waterford pushed forward.
Josh Giurgi put in a neat ball into the box in the 33rd minute and Blues’ defender Niall O’Keeffe had to put it out for a corner.
In the 41st minute Shane Griffin’s shot was deflected out for a corner. Just before the break Ross Fay was taken down on the edge of the box but Adam Verdon’s free went over the bar.
Longford Town manager Stephen Henderson must wonder when his luck will change with injuries; already missing several key players, his captain Shane Elworthy and mister reliable, limped off injured in the 52nd minute.
In the 61st minute Oluwu forced Jack Brady into making a fine save. The loose ball fell to Griffin and he smashed his effort off the crossbar.
Griffin had another chance to break the deadlock in the 78th minute but he blasted the ball over the bar. It was all Waterford with Oluwu’s header going just wide two minutes later.
The visitors kept piling on the pressure in the hope of getting a goal. Manager Keith Long introduced Tunmise Sobowale and Wassim Aouachria but they didn’t create too much to trouble the Town defence or Brady in the final 10 minutes. The home side were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure.
