LOI FD Preview: Longford Town v Bray Wanderers

With just two games remaining in the league Bray Wanderers still have a chance to claim a play-off spot. They’re depending on results going their way as well as winning their final two games. Their penultimate game is this afternoon against Longford Town in Bishopsgate. (4pm).

A few weeks ago not many would have had Bray in with a chance of getting 5th place but a good run of form combined with Athlone Town losing three games in a row means that Ian Ryan’s side are still in contention.

In their last two games Bray have defeated Cobh Ramblers and Athlone Town. It was the first time they claimed back to back wins since May. The win against Athlone last Friday night saw them move to within four points of the Midlanders. Conor Knight scored the only goal of the game at the Athlone Town Stadium. It was his second goal in two games.

At the beginning of September Longford Town were very much fighting for a play-off spot but a run of four defeats in a row has seen Stephen Henderson’s men slip down the table to 8th place and their season over.

Last weekend they were defeated 2-0 by Cobh Ramblers at St. Colman’s Park. Wilson Waweru and Jack Doherty with the goals for Shane Keegan’s side.

In the three previous games with Bray this season Town have won once and the other two ended in draws. The first meeting at the Carlisle Grounds ended 0-0. The next game at Bishopsgate in April finished 1-1. Josh Giurgi put Town ahead in the 10th minute but former Town player Conor Davis equalised for Wanderers in the 80th minute; he has now departed the club.

The game at the Carlisle Grounds in August saw the Town come from behind to win 4-2. A Chris Lyons penalty and a goal from Dane Massey put the home side 2-0 ahead in the 48th minute. Goals from Cristian Magerusan and Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh saw the Midlanders equalise. Substitute Jordan Adeyemo scored a brace late on to claim a dramatic win for the Town.

  • Good afternoon and welcome to Final Whistle's coverage of Longford Town and Bray Wanderers.
