Match Report
Stalemate in battle of the Rovers
Sligo Rovers earned a valuable point tonight in a 1-1 draw with Shamrock Rovers at The Showgrounds.
An Andy Lyons header after 22 minutes gave the visitors the lead as they dominated a flat Sligo in the first-half.
In the 71st minute David Cawley stood up a cross for Jordan Hamilton who headed home an equaliser for the Bit O’Red against the run of play. Both sides cancelled each other out in the last 20 minutes and it finished a point a piece.
Garry Buckley’s sending off in the 85th minute, when he received a second yellow; spurred a stoppage time onslaught from the advantaged Hoops but Sligo hung on to rescue a share of the spoils.
Stephen Bradley will be disappointed with the dropped points, with Derry winning at Pats; but mainly because of the superiority his side showed in the first half. He executed his three at the back tactics perfectly in the opening 45 minutes and the hosts were completely flat as a result.
Ronan Finn and Lyons stretched wide on the flanks giving Dylan Watts and Gary O’Neill some added space in the middle allowing to Tallaght side to control the tempo. Jack Byrne drifted into the pockets in vintage style to cause even more issues.
Liam Buckely tried to pack the Bit O’Reds’ midfield to deal with the Dubliners but it just meant they had nothing to offer going forward. Deservedly, the away side took the lead when Lyons rose highest from Byrne’s corner and headed past Ed McGinty to score in two games running.
The second half began in a similar vein with the Showgrounds outfit failing to threaten and Byrne causing problems by feeding Rory Gaffney and Danny Mandriou through once or twice.
In the 71st minute the hosts threw a spanner in the works when skipper Cawley crossed for Hamilton who headed across goal into the far corner to snatch an equaliser. Shortly before and after this goal Sligo had built there only bit of momentum in the game and for the next 15 minutes they matched the Hoops.
Buckley pulled Richie Towell to the turf with five minutes left to receive a red and this meant Bradley’s men pushed through stoppage time for the winner. Some solid defending and trusty box-commanding from McGinty ruled this out and it finished 1-1.
A dull but consequential game at the top end. Shamrock Rovers are now three points off leaders Derry. Sligo have now taken points off them twice in their last seven games.
