Sligo hold on in Tallaght to go top
Sligo Rovers moved top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division thanks to a lone goal, as they ensured Shamrock Rovers suffered back-to-back losses at Tallaght Stadium tonight.
A 55th minute Romeo Parkes strike sent Sligo to the top of the Division, despite the hosts pressing hard for an equaliser late on.
The game started slowly, as the hosts were forced into an early substitution as the experienced Joey O’Brien had to leave the pitch with a calf injury, something of a concern for Stephen Bradley as he already has a thin squad through injuries.
The Bit O’Red showed real intent early on with Bolger and Jordan Gibson creating chances. The Former Hoop, Bolger, with something to prove certainly did that with a dominating performance for the centre of the park.
He was to be seen at all areas of the pitch creating chances and getting his body in the way at the other end. Bolger, Figueira and Gibson all came close to the target in the opening half hour.
Nearing half time Shamrock Rovers defender Scales was lucky to stay on the pitch. After losing out to Gibson, he seemed to attempt to go through the Birmingham born winger in order to retrieve the ball.
Gibson moments later pulled down Danny Mandriou as he was breaking forward, after noticing his defender Garry Buckley off the pitch with a footwear issue.
As half time approached Ireland international Graham Burke threw himself to the floor looking for a penalty, but Referee Neil Doyle had a good look and deemed no foul had been committed.
The second half started lively and was end-to-end stuff with both sides having chance to make the breakthrough.
However, in the 55th minute a John Mahon clearance found its way to Gibson who slotted the ball to Parkes as the Jamaican raced forward to score the only goal of the game.
The following 20 minutes saw an onslaught from the Hoops in search of an equalizer, but Sligo defended in numbers snuffing out every chance.
With little experience on the bench Bradley stuck with his experienced players on the pitch only calling on Chris McCann and youngster Dean Williams to shake things up.
Rovers last meaningful attack came with a few minutes remaining on the clock, as Scotsman Ed McGinty confidently gathered a Danny Mandriou corner.
Sligo played the remaining minutes playing keep ball the majority of which was in the Shamrock Rovers half.
In the dying moments the Hoops attempted one final attack but Burkes heavy touch allowed Robbie McCourt step in and nick the ball away winning a free kick on the half way line at the same time.
The full time whistle at Tallaght Stadium saw Sligo worthy of all three points and deserved table toppers as we edge closer to the mid-season break.
After two defeats in a row Stephen Bradley's men will look to arrest their form as they travel to Longford next week. Next up for Sligo is the North-West derby with a trip to Ballybofey to face Finn Harps.
